:o Where, how do I register an internet domain? I do not want to get it through a hosting service or ISP because I want to be sure I have control over it.

Also let's say I register MyDomain.co.za is there anything extra I'll have to do to have addresses like this Home.MyDomain.co.za or Work.MyDomain.co.za? I'm guessing that would depend on the host? By the way I can't remember what that's called, sub-domains?

Thanks. :D

(Don't need any advertisements for hosting services thanks.)

You can register your domain through Uniforum (http://co.za) but you'll need to have your hosting account set up first.

To answer your other question: yes, they're called subdomains, and -- if your host allows you to set them up -- you will be able to create them very easily through your domain's control panel.

Thanks texo. You sure about having to have a host before registering a domain, that rather sucks, what if hosts require you to have a domain to register lol.

They dont.

As long as the host provides for subdomains you shouldn't have any problems.

If you just want to register the domain you can setup the DNS at everydns.com and send through the registration form, but if you were not sure on the meaning of the word, 'sub-domain' ... I would suggest getting someone experienced in the industry to handle the registration.

Just make sure to ask them to set the registrants email address as yours, and you will have top level control over it.

Hi Guys, I am sure somebody could help me here... I have registered a domain through SAdomain.co.za..

Anyways they charge R100 for the registration and R100 per annum renewal. Then they charge an extra R80 for a NONSTEALTH URL forward every year..

And now they want R23 per MONTH per email address I want configured on my domain (say [email protected] forward to [email protected])...

What am I doing wrong? (except for paying too much)?

What ISP could I transfer my domain to, in order to get URL forwarding (stealth please) and some email forwards, at a normal price?

This is what I found to work the best. Register a free account at zoneedit.com and configure your domain on their site. They will provide you with DNS servers for the domain registration. Register your domain on co.za and add the DNS servers from eazydns. The domain renewal is R50 per year if I remember correctly.

Then you can register an account at google apps for your domain (www.google.com/a) and point the MX records to google to handle your email for the domain.

You will have the power to configure your subdomains and to move or change anything and this for R50 per year.

Hope this helps!

Yes, this is VERY helpful!

You see I wanted to organise my own URL forwarding with SAdomain.co.za, but they refused to change nameservers (in order to protect their URL forwarding fee of R80 a year I guess)..

I have tried with ZoneEdit frankly, but they require the nameservers to be updated by my ISP (SAdomain.co.za) but they plain refused... - Is that legal?

What can I do now?

I cannot transfer my domain from SAdomain to co.za :-) ?

AmaDownload,

What I have done is purchase international hosting with www.bluehost.com and use uniforum to register and manage all my local domains. http://co.za

I've found that to be the most cost-effective way of going about things. Also have Google Apps managing my email.

Cheers,
David

I don't believe that they are allowed to deny it.... but I am not 100% sure. Maybe you should get in contact with someone at co.za to confirm how / what to do in this situation. Do you have some sort of a contract with SAdomain?

I once had a similar problem to you when I still wasted money registering through cozahost and others.

All you have to do is use the form http://co.za/coza_reg.txt and change all the details to yourself and your Google Apps nameserver. If sadomain refuse the ticket, contact uniforum and ask them to send you the form to fill out which enables you to force the ownership of the domain to yourself. I've had to go through this messy process in the past :(

No, no contracts as far as I know.. But I am late now.. I've already paid the R100 and the R80, so maybe I should wait closer to renewal time and then attempt to use the form http://co.za/coza_reg.txt and take true ownership of my domain?

I am only on the brink of overseeing the full picture of what is all needed to register a domain, set up URL forwards and create email forwards - I need to get a bit more understanding of how stuff works :-)

Thanks guys!

You can wait if you want to--but there is no real need. It costs nothing to submit the form. Plus, sadomain might give you grief when you try to change ownership. So I would personally do it early to avoid the lengthy process of force-moving the ownership.

I would get the ball rolling if I was you.... I agree with davidpey that you never know what sort of grief they will give you.

I am no expert with this, but had a similar situation and needed to figure it out. Now I am glad that I did because the saving and flexibility is great! I can basically host anywhere and control my own domain.

This is exactly why the forum is here, so that you can get info ;-)

Yes, you're paying too much :)

R80 for nothing is..... almost theft ?

It's sad to see that many ISP will give you grieve if you move YOUR domain, which YOU paid for, yet they do it, and get away with it.

AmaDownload - it's your domain, you can & should move it whenever you like to. I'd be happy to help you out if you run into any problems.
