Hi guys, I'm busy building a .net website. Running on a local machine with sql server 2005. I'm now wanting to register a domain and begin testing it. I've never registered one before so pretty clueless. Also I'm not sure what type of webhosting I need for the platform I'm using, can anyone give me some suggestions I'd appreciate it!!! :)

Contact any of the web hosts, they (can) do that for you, costs ~R70 a year.

I find GamCo to be one of the cheapest Windows hosts. Seeing as your DB is MSSQL2005, you will need a Windows host. Hetzner is great for dedicated servers though.

Not sure I need a dedicated server, well not yet but hopefully things will grow to new heights with this site hehe

I'll give GamCo a call tomorrow and see what they say, will let you guys know :)

Why not try WebAfrica for Windows hosting? If you were not using Microsoft SQL Server, I'd also recommend Hetzner. You could always (like others said) transfer to Hetzner once you need a Windows dedicated server.

By the sounds of it you're probably using ASP.NET, so make sure you take a package that support ASP.NET (and the specific .NET Framework version you're developing in).

Could give them a call too, I heard of them some time back yeh why not. I'm using ASP.net 2.0, its just the sql server 2005 thing I'm concerned about but I'm sure webafrica or gamco will know how to configure it etc

Yeah, they will setup the Microsoft SQL database (or you do it via their control panel if they provide that function) with a username and password. Then you just need to change your connection string in your ASP.NET web application to point to your live database, which is hosted by your web hosting company.

Trust me, GamCo will know how to set up your app correctly. I've hosted several web applications with them already, one even included a URL re-writing module. If they don't know how to set it up, you just log a query and they respond almost instantly. You can also specify which .NET framework version your application runs on and they'll set it up accordingly.

I tried to register my domain on GamCo but it says I need a company ID Number. How on earth do I get one of those and do I really need one? Ultimately this website will be generating revenue so not sure if registering a company is a pre-requesite to that?

Any info would be welcome! :)

Hetzner are lame.

I'm not too sure about hetzner anymore. Been using them for about the last 2 years - no problems. In the last week my site has been down 3 times. Everytime I email them and then they fix it and then after a while it bombs out again.

Think i might just go to webafrica. Already using them for other services.

No, you don't need a company ID. Just type "not applicable" or something similar. It's just in case a company is the one signing a service contract with them. The online form you fill in is just used to generate a nice PDF document for you, which you anyway have to sign and provide some further details on. All you need to do is to complete the form, print out the generated PDF and sign it. Mail it back to GamCo and they'll contact you within a few minutes (if it's still during business hours, of course). :)

I suggest you first register your own domain name so that you aren't tied to a specific web host. Check out:

but you'd still need a host to supply nameservers for you to use.

anyhow, you shouldn't be tied to a specific host since as long as you're the recognised registrant/owner of the domain, you can move it to alternative nameservers and update it as you please.

You can use free nameservers, just to register the domain. I know mydomain.com offers them.

Are there any free local nameservers?

nope, afaik no free local ones but a couple of great internationals

I use afraid.freedns.org, and would highly recommend them. They give you complete control over your domain, and you can add a total of 50 subdomains over all your domains. They offer dynamic ip updates and numerous methods to update it, and allow you to add/edit most common records, A, AAAA, CNAME, MX, TXT and a couple more.

Yeah, that's exactly what I'm talking about! If you want to add a sub domain or something, you can just log in and do it. :D

No phoning or emailing support. :p
