Registering as a tax payer...

Ok, so I found out today, that for me to register with Medi-staff (to work for ER24) I need to have a SARS number, and to get a SARS number, I need to register as a tax payer - something I've never done but I guess I have to do now.

On the web site it says that I need the following;

Are you a first-time tax payer?

You need to register as a tax payer in order to get a tax number. Please complete the IT 77 form, then visit your nearest SARS branch and hand it in together with:

• A certified copy of your Identification Document or Passport (drivers licences are not accepted);
• Your bank details: either a cancelled cheque or a certified/original copy of your account statement or an original letter from the bank confirming your bank details;
• Income details for the last 3 years e.g. copies of IRP5 etc;
• Proof of residence e.g. your rates/electricity bill.

So!

My 1st question;

If I take only what they ask for (above) - is that all I need or will they ask me for other stuff?
I would want to take everything so I don't have to go and then come back with extra stuff.

My 2nd question;

I don't have any of my salary slips and such from my past jobs, those were all in a file which was 'stolen' when my flat was broken into - so if I take them the IRP5's from my current job (which I've been at for 2 years) will that be ok?

If you only take the IRP5s it should be fine.
Usually they want the usual, ID Book, Proof of Residence, and then the income-related documents like the IRP5.

I haven't done this in a while, so I stand to be corrected.

I want to take everything I need to take so I stand it in once and NEVER again.

I cant remember ever going to SARS to register. Our accountant at the time gave me a number to phone to get me registered for E-Filing and that was that.

Odd, I filled in the IT77 form at home, took the relevant documentation, and then just handed it in at the front desk. In and out in two minutes. This was in Randburg.

They then posted a letter with my tax number confirming my registration.

Do it as soon as possible to avoid the rush at SARS when the employee tax filing begins. Should be a breeze.

I'm sure I never did. When I started earning a taxable salary the accountant where I worked registered me.

Also, your tax number should be on your IRP5 I dont see how you can be getting IRP5's without a tax number :wtf:

Yo IRP5 is just to show what u earned & what u paid....if u dont have a tax number they trace you by ID no!

OP: take what u have, they wont ask u 4 anything else..or u can always call their callcentre & they will assist.
your bank statement must be original (stamped) or else they will give you grief.

Try calling SARS (on 0800007277 choose option 5, then option 1) to see if you've been registered before, which you should, from previous employment.

If you were, then they'll be able to give you your tax reference number. And that's all your new employee should need.

Yep, this ^ If you've worked before you've probably been registered in a batch registration by your company. I went a week ago to register for the first time and was surprised to find myself already registered by a previous employer, but I had to update most of my details in any case.

Also it won't take long at all, they open at 8 so be there at by 7.30 (I got there 7.45 ish) and you should be done in 20-30 minutes, that's about how long it took me and you can easily be at the front of the queue if you arrive earlier. It's all very efficient and painless really.

Agrees. My daughter received her first SARS letter yesterday - her employer registered her as a taxpayer.
