Registering for BEE

My uncle runs a one man plumbing business, he has recently been getting calls from a private company asking him to register for BEE, they advise that it is required by law for him to register for BEE? He has advised them that he is a 'one man operation' and does not plan on adding staff so he does not see the need to register for BEE. They now insist to send someone to come talk to him.
Does any forumnites have any info in regards to whats needs to be done (or not done) regarding registration of BEE for small businesses?

It is not compulsory to have your BEE credentials or lack thereof verified.

If your uncle were to tender for plumbing work, it may be a requirement of the tender though, but verification is very different from 'registration'.

Sounds like the caller is talking complete bollocks.

Agreed, he has no intention of ever tendering for any gvmt related work. I can understand that for tendering work you will need BEE credentials, but he is your run of the mill small town plumber biz, whch is why I was asking.

Appreciate the info,thanks

These agencies are rampant nowadays and they are quite insistent. They also charge consultation services and have an enrolment program to promote BEE-exempt services as a service. This is completely abusing the system.

These guys do BEE ratings so they are just trolling for business.

There is no reason to have this, they are just trying to get money out of him.

Wasn't aware it has resorted to this.

One last hoorah before DTI takes BEE verification in-house?

The wonder of this forum. I could have been search online for some time for relevant info, here I have received 'real life' info in about 10 minutes which was confirming my thoughts, but I wasnt sure. I will relay all info accordingly, and I know if will set his mind at ease.

Thanks all

I don't know the limitations in which these rating agencies are allowed to conduct their consultation, ratings, auditing etc., they are clearly creating new revenue streams. It is completely understandable when providing a solution to a need or legal requirement, but to shove this ‘non-exempt’ service down on a customer is unethical.
