Good day,

I am currently a part-time postgraduate student at Wits University. I am doing a postgraduate diploma in tax which will finish around August 2023. As this is a part-time degree it doesn't really take up much of my time. I wanted to bridge to CTA in order to sit for CA(SA) exams and currently have a offer to do so at UNISA. The bridging course is one year long which will start in 2023. I am sure I can cope with the work as the lectures for the postgraduate diploma are only conducted once a week.

I am aware of a rule that states a student cannot be registered at two universities at the same time. My question was does the rule still apply if one of the degrees is a part-time course. I have tried to get an answer from my faculty but have not received any response as yet. What can I do in such a situation? Thank you

I have two extended relatives that did this . One her honours/masters ... wait for it ... while doing their bachelor's.

Another did one degree locally and the other one overseas at the same time in two different fields.

They both passed everything. So I guess if the uni allows it, then you should be fine.

If you end up in jail because of this, will you please ask one of your family members to post an update to this thread?

I bet they are also at their Wits' end ...
Lol, I'm still at home waiting for a reply. The university is closed for holidays so I will only get some sort of response in the first week of January. But it would be funny if I end up in jail because of this. "Student arrested for attempting to complete two degrees at once."

yeah I guess I have to wait for the faculty to give me permission to do it.

My 2c, if you are waiting for Unisa for an answer.... you are going to wait a very, very long time. Take your preferred mode of transportation to the campus and get sent around all day till you either tire out or come home with your answers

So just an update from Wits, they replied with the following;

"Good day,

Thank you for your email. Please note that the University cannot permit this concurrent registration. We allow concurrent registration if the student is missing some courses which they want to complete through UNISA.

Regards"

Not sure what can I do after this. I only have 6 months left for my postgraduate diploma at Wits and it doesn't really take up much of my time during the week. Can I just register for the required modules at UNISA individually which would make it seem like I'm not doing a specific degree/diploma and just a bunch of individual modules?

Dude, they gave you the loophole.

"We allow concurrent registration if the student is missing some courses which they want to complete through UNISA."

If you're sure you won't fail anything, I highly doubt they'll ever find out. And if they do, say you misunderstood that as being given allowance as you were missing some courses that you wanted to complete.
