As of yesterday the LPG price is regulated at the retailers. I think this is a good start; the price at the wholesalers should be next.
As things go last night my gas heater started to "spit", and died. So with an empty in hand I go hunting for a refill. I have a few petrol stations close to home, so this shouldn’t take too long.
Get to my local Total Garage, and they have a full stock of 9kg bottles… R210 each.
WTF , had a fight with the people there, informing them politely that it is R155.43 per bottle, but they insisted that it is R210.
So off to the local Shell Motors.
Walk in and same story, all be it a bit cheaper at R180 per bottle. Now I was cold and just paid for it and went home. So between last night and this morning I have spoken to everyone from Shell and Total customer care, they state that there is no regulated price, and even trying to speak to the department of Energy, of course they are not answering their phones.

So has anyone actually been able to buy a 9kg bottle at the regulated price? Or even getting someone to admit that they are breaking the law.

Besides convenience, how is LPG more cost effective than electricity?

LPG has an energy value of 13.9 kWh per kilogram. So a 9kg bottle has 125.1 kWh of energy. At current electricity prices of around R1 per kWh, you pay R125.10 for the electricity and R175 for the gas.

So it is cheaper to heat/cook with electricity.

1. when Eksdom play with the power button I am still warm.
2. I can heat my lounge in about 3 minutes.
3. Not yet found anything at a decent price that can warm my lounge besides gas.

A gass heater is more effective. Cooking is also more effective it is instant heat.

Heard on 5FM that there are quite a few complaints about this, this morning.

Now R148.00/9KG for the gas. Gas is instant heat. Electricity not so. If I switch on my 3KW gas heater the result are immediate. With the electric heater you have to wait!

I paid R155 for a 9kg at the Engen garage just off Beyers on the weekend.
If you take the N1-S offramp, turn right onto Beyers and continue until you see the McDs.
Take that left and the garage will be on your left.

another Engen garage on Beyers has it for R165 which is also a decent price.

That's not very decent considering it's been regulated.

It may be cheaper with electricity because gas is not greatly used compared to electricity. Once gas use becomes more common and gas is more easily available, those sums will change.

Cooking with gas is more economical due to the regulation process. Instant heat on, Instant heat off.

i find

that when i use my gas heater, i have to sit quite close to it to be warm. It doesnt warm up my lounge at all and i definitely feel claustrophobic and have breathing problems with it on, gives me a slight headache

and my lounge is large yet i still feel 'gassed'
