Reinhardt Buys completed BLC and LLB degrees at the University of Pretoria where he was also elected to the Student Representative Council in 1994. After completing his articles at Weavind & Weavind (Pretoria) and Nelson Borman & Partners (Johannesburg) he completed an LLM Degree at the University of Cape Town. The topic of his thesis was "The taxation of e-commerce income".
Reinhardt was employed by Sonnenburg, Hoffman and Galombik in Cape Town. He resigned to start his own law firm, Buys Incorporated, in January 2001 - one of the first law firms in South Africa to specialise exclusively in IT, Internet and e-commerce law.
Reinhardt was editor of South Africa's first interactive Internet law textbook, " Cyberlaw@SA", which had the unique distinction of being the first textbook of its kind in South Africa to have had a virtual launch on the Internet. Reinhardt continued to edit the Top 100 Cyberlaw FAQ and the second edition of Cyberlaw@SA which was launched in January 2004.
As an entertaining and knowledgeable speaker, he regularly addresses local and international conferences and seminars on Internet and e-commerce law. Reinhardt acted as guest lecturer at the University of Stellenbosch, RAU, the University of the Western Cape, Cape Technicon and his alma maters, the University of Pretoria and UCT.
Reinhardt is passionate about technology and how it affects the law - when he's not advising clients he spends his time researching and writing his LLD thesis, titled: "The effect of technology on copyright in the entertainment industry."
