Hi Guru's, thinking of adding to my IT Degree and to my Java years of experience the Oracle Java certification. How relevant is this today and would it be advisable to embark on this journey? I still to also need to decide whether to to my MBA or Msc Comp Sci. I need to make these decisions this year and perhaps start mid year or next year. I'm not much into the management route but would welcome it if it comes. I'm more towards the Architect or Technical Design, or just specialist in Development ...

Don't bother with the Java cert. Get the MBA (If it's from UCT or Wits)

I would say if you can manage and afford to do the certs, go ahead.
Later you can do an MBA. Study as much you can, as long as it it relevant to your work.

To get promoted within the same company i need experience, potential and be identified as an excellent candidate for whatever post, this without MBA/Msc/Cert... I'm doing this for personal growth and international recognition, or if i want to jump ship to a very senior position...

Someone mentioned this that Java Cert is a waste of time. So you reckon Msc Comp. Sc is not as good as MBA?

Their is very little benefit in going from Bsc CompSci to MSc CompSci money wise.
And your skillset will be lacking in the business side. MBA provides this

Beware the cost of an MBA, last time I checked, the fees for UCT in 2012 were somewhere around R 140K.

If you have a degree and Java experience, then a Java cert isn't really very useful. If you are a starter, it's a different story, and adding on to your list of Java certs would be a good way of "proving" that you are progressing.

Just my opinion, but based on experience from both sides (hiree + hirer).
