Relocating Back to SA: What to bring back?

Fellow myBB residents,

My company just lost a big client which made up about a 3rd of revenue for the last two years. Expatriates a facing layoffs, I just survived the first round of lyaoffs but there will be two more rounds of layoffs(Dec and Jan) which I'm unlikely to escape. Luckily for me there are a number of benefits that I'll get including a paid for shipment container for me to relocate back to SA. Right now I can probably fill about a 1/5th of the container with my furniture and household items, I would like to fill up the rest, I would like to know what additional things I can bring that won't be subject to import tax. I've been out of SA for 4 years.

Most of my appliances are rated 110v/60Hz?(TVs, Blenders, Hot iron etc.) Do I sell those or just wire my house to support dual voltage appliances.

Don't bring back 110v/60Hz appliances unless you can change the PSU (not worth it).

Get shopping lists from family and friends.
 
In order:

- Don't come back (but realistically might not be avoidable)
- Bring back dollars. Nothing else matters.
 
Some tv's and other electronics might be able to work on 220v

Our black Friday is usually after people get paid month end.
 
I would never come back to SA if I was in your position.

Rather try stay there if I were you, unless you like no water, no electricity and you'd most likely lose all the **** you pack into that container to thieves (government and otherwise) within a span of 6 months.

Are you on an L1 or H1B visa? If the latter, you can get that transferred to a new employer. Also, IIRC, for H1B visas, you also get 10 days to secure employment elsewhere after you are retrenched (ideally you would set something up earlier of course).

So the company you work for is laying off foreigners. And you are now "shipped" back to SA?

:erm: Why not just find other employment there :confused:

I hear there's a large number of illegal immigrants in the US, making enough money to support their families back in the 3rd world.
