Remote Desktop

through the internet?

Not sure if thats safe - but I'm assuming you'd have to enable the RDP incoming ports on his PC firewall, and if he's using a router, set the ports to forward to his PC on the router, and then allow RDP connections in Windows 7 on his PC.

Only problem is then anyone on the interwebz can attempt to remote desktop to his PC if they have his internet facing IP address..

Here is the answer. http://www.teamviewer.com/download/index.aspx

This is what I use when I don't have LogMeIn installed on the clients machine.

You don't need to fiddle with port forwarding, router firewalls or Dynamic DNS.

Ja, +1 for TeamViewer... it sends him a "ticket" by e-mail that he clicks on... and it lets you have access to his machine.

I work for a small company that does support for UK clients we are using LOGMEIN at the moment. The company is going through some financial difficulties & I am looking for ways we can save money. so my question is

1. Is TEAM VIEWER cheaper than LOGMEIN?
2. Is the interface as easy as LOGMEIN ?

We have in excess of 250 000 clients so I need a system that's easy & can run on a 4MB adsl line keeping in mind that we use SKYPE for voice communication. We are using iBurst at the moment but will be moving over to OPENWEB 4MB ADSL in October 2009.

Any advice or assistance will be appreciated.

You can email me on [email protected]

Thanks :D

Hamchi would not allow me to take control of the desktop, seems logmein is the easiest.

Thanks

Both Parties need Hamachi. Install it on your rig. Create a Network, assign a Network name and password. Client/Friend installs Hamachi, joins the network. When both Pc's are online, Hamachi will create List with all pc's online and a IP address. Copy IP and enter in in the remote desktop connex. Done. Easiest App ever, and its free for non commercial use.

Edit.

Teamviewer and hamachi are total diff apps. Teamviewer makes use of the HTTP protocol, where hamachi creates a virtual network and the pc's can all be accesed via the normal remote desktop application built into windows.

Anyways, no matter what app you choose, the client needs to download something. I think Teamviewer is the easiest for what you want to do, as they do not need to create or join a virtual network. I have used it for a while(free version, experienced to many problems with it. Not sure how the paid version performs.

+1 teamviewer. You also don't even need to have it installed. When installing it will ask you either "Install" or "Run w/o installing"

Good list there Gary. Here is some more... AFAIK Mikogo is the only remote desktop software that's free for commercial use that works similar to TeamViewer. Starts of in presentation mode and then you have to switch roles and request remote control. Response is slightly slower than TeamViewer/LogMeIn but a lot faster than Crossloop/ShowMyPc and other VNC based services. Adobe ConnectNow at acrobat.com is also free but the remote control is a bit on the slow side.

Thanks!

I'll add both of those to my list! :)
