Remotely connect / Disconnect 3g via sms?

Hi Guys,

Is there a way to remotely connect or disconnect a mtn 3G connection with a sms?
 
Extremely vague question.....what equipment are you using for 3g connection?

Telemetry devices tend to be remotely controlled by sms, and some 3g modems too. You have to dig quite deep to find the 'at' commands for some of the 3g modems

Sorry, yeah it was.

I am using a B660 router. Will it be possible with it?

Know nothing much about that particular device.
If it was a Linux box with a 3g modem, might have been able to help
 
Yeah, just a PC running Linux. It processes the SMS requests, and runs a different script based on the message it received.
It has 3g modem attached
So I can even remotely reboot it if I want, or tell it to do what I want.

We use it for our digital advertisement boards scattered all over SA. So, reboot, collect new content, delete content is just an SMS away

Ok, can I do this myself?
Is there any tutorials available to configure a similiar setup?
Can I use this Linux box for Home usage and share the connection to several stations via a wireless or wired connection?

Sorry for all the questions?

Maybe i need to understand a little more why you need to do this.
Will switching the router off work for your purposes? Or do you need to specifically switch off the 3g? For example when you are not around and don't want abuse to happen?

Hi,

Yes. Just want to switch the 3G on/off remotely. Not the router.
 
Look for:
- AT commands for your modem
- Terminal emulator program with powerful scripting language like REXX in ZOC, or use Windows API for your own program.

The GlobeSurfer 3+ router supports remote SMS control with the commands REBOOT, CONNECT and DISCONNECT. You may need to upgrade to the latest firmware for this feature.

Interesting. This thread has really got me thinking about how to do it other ways. If it supported by the router, it makes life much easier. No scripting or anything like that.

Where would you get that router locally? And at what price?

It has integrated 3G, so the USB port is used to share a printer or as a file server to share a USB disk.

The GenIP 30i Industrial Router let's you do much more with SMS, like respond to complex SMS macro commands, send SMS messages when certain events occur, etc.
