First preview images are out of Renault's new coupé-style crossover/

Renault names its upcoming coupé-style crossover ‘Arkana’

Renault has released a fresh teaser image of a concept that will preview its upcoming global coupé-style crossover, which the automaker has now revealed will be named “Arkana”.

Set to be fully uncovered at the Moscow International Motor Show at the end of August 2018, the newcomer will be produced at the French automaker’s plant in Moscow.

Renault describes the upcoming Arkana production model as a “distinctive C-segment crossover” (so, it should be a little larger than the Captur), explaining that its name is derived from the Latin word Arcanum (meaning “secret”), which has been “used for centuries to mark events and phenomena of special significance”.

An earlier teaser image (see below) depicts the Boulogne-Billancourt-based automaker’s latest family face, while the latest image shows that it will boast full-width tail-lamps like the Mégane.

While the concept’s unveiling will take place in Russia on August 29, the production model is due to launch in that country in 2019, before being rolled out to other global markets in the future.

New Renault Arkana crossover previewed ahead of reveal

Renault's new crossover, which will be revealed at the Moscow motor show next week ahead of a 2019 launch, will be called the Arkana.

The firm has released a new preview image of the C-segment machine, showing the tailgate with Arkana badging on. Renault has previously shown a single image of the new model.

The Arkana is likely to be based on the Kaptur, a slightly larger version of the Captur made for the Russian market. While it is conceived as a global model, the Arkana will be key to increasing Renault’s sales in Russia, its second-largest market behind France.

The crossover’s name is derived from 'arcanum', the Latin word for secret, with Renault claiming that the concept of Arkana is "associated with mystery, attractiveness and pioneer spirit".

The teaser photo shows rear lights with a bar that runs almost the full width of the tailgate, split in the middle by the Renault logo. It also shows a pronounced rear boot lip. An earlier teaser image showed the outline of the Arkana’s front. When lightened, it suggests a sportier-looking variant with a coupé-like roofline to cater to tastes for swept-back crossovers.

Renault’s latest design language, first demonstrated by the Mégane, has been applied to the new car’s nose, with C-shaped daytime running lights that feed out of the main headlight units.

Russia is a key focus for Renault because it offers the French firm an almost unrivalled opportunity for growth. In 2017, the firm sold 414,000 cars in the country. That's a 7% rise on the year before, despite the fact that Russia’s new car market shrank by 2.8%.

The new car will be built in Moscow for the Russian market in 2019, although it will eventually be offered in other countries. The UK is unlikely to be on the list of destinations, but the car’s design similarities with the Mégane suggest future models sold here, such as the upcoming Clio, will adopt the same features.

Renault Arkana Concept

At the 2018 Moscow Motor Show, Renault unveils the Arkana show car as a world premiere, a distinctive coupé-crossover announcing a new global vehicle. Its class-unique design will be a real novelty in the very competitive C-segment.

The C-segment is currently the most dynamic and challenging sector of the automotive industry, especially SUVs. Customers' needs are getting more and more diverse. Renault Arkana is born from those customers' new expectations. It proposes an astonishing balance between the elegance of a saloon and the sturdiness of an SUV.

The Renault Arkana show car features a powerful and attractive design:

Robustness is expressed through high ground clearance, wide wheel arches and large 19-inch wheels, for good all-terrain capabilities. A sturdy vehicle ready to face harsh driving and tough weather conditions
The elegance of the high waistline and sloping coupé roofline is emphasised by side chrome detailing and a panoramic glass roof
"The Arkana show car is a distinctive coupé-crossover, striking balance between the elegance of a saloonn and the powerful stance of an SUV. We have dialed in specific Renault cues, with a strong design, strength and sensuality with a French touch," says Laurens Van den Acker - Senior-Vice-President, Corporate Design of Groupe Renault

This new production vehicle will be produced and marketed in different countries throughout the world, beginning with Russia in 2019. Renault Arkana will be later manufactured and sold in Asia and other regions, with this same unique design but adapted also to local customers' expectations. There are no plans for the model to be sold in Europe.

As part of its Drive the Future strategic plan, Groupe Renault intends to step up the pace of international growth, expanding its product range to increase sales volumes up to 5 million units by 2022. Arkana will play a key role in achieving this goal.

Groupe Renault claimed almost one-third of the Russian market in 2017 (448,270 vehicle sold / 28% market share). Russia today ranks as Groupe Renault's number two market and is set to become the Group's leading market by the end of plan.

"The idea for this innovative concept came from Russia and the project was conducted with the strong involvement of Renault Russia teams. Arkana will meet Russian customers' aspirations but also the ones of new customers in many countries worldwide, enabling Groupe Renault to further pursue its international growth as part of its Drive the Future strategic plan," says Nicolas Maure - Senior-Vice-President, Chairman of Eurasia Region.

Say hello to the swoopy new Renault Arkana coupé-crossover!

Following a couple of teasers and the reveal of the newcomer’s name, the fresh-faced (or should that be fresh-reared?) Renault Arkana coupé-crossover show car has been officially unveiled at the Moscow International Motor Show.

Billed as a “new global vehicle”, Renault says the show car “prefigures” the Arkana production vehicle that will initially be built at the French automaker’s plant in Moscow. Interestingly, the brand adds that it will later be produced and marketed in “different countries throughout the world”.

The name is derived from the Latin word Arcanum (meaning “secret”), which, says Renault, has been “used for centuries to mark events and phenomena of special significance”.
The show car runs on 19-inch alloys and features a high waistline with a sloping coupé-like roofline, as well as a panoramic sunroof.

“The Arkana show car is a distinctive coupé-crossover, striking balance between the elegance of a saloon and the powerful stance of an SUV. We have dialled in specific Renault cues, with a strong design, strength and sensuality with a French touch,” said Laurens van den Acker, senior vice president for corporate design at Groupe Renault.

The Boulogne-Billancourt-based automaker is expected to reveal technical specifications at a later date.

Renault Arkana

Groupe Renault confirms its desire to break the rules and become the first general vehicle maker to offer an international Coupé SUV. The production version of Arkana is an all-new C-segment (4.54 m) model with an innovative, distinctive design. Built at the Moscow plant and on sale from this summer on the Russian market, it will contribute to the worldwide expansion of Groupe Renault as part of its strategic Drive the Future plan.

Combining the elegance of a saloon, the sportiness of a coupé and the robustness of an SUV, the Arkana show-car impressed everyone when it was unveiled at the 2018 Moscow Motor Show.

The external design of the production version of the Arkana Coupé SUV differs only slightly from the show-car. It retains the sloping roof line, very high waistline and wide, expressive bumper. The chrome components on the grill and around the windows and C-Shape LED headlights embody the DNA of Renault design, to highlight its elegant appearance.

When it goes on the market in summer 2019, the All-New Renault Arkana Coupé SUV will be offered in a range of 7 bodywork colours and 3 finish levels. It will be fitted with 17-inch tyres.
