Renault Arkana

Renault Arkana is a French SUV Coupe

A robust crossover coupe, for Russia, by Renault at an affordable price.
Renault has commenced deliveries of its new C-segment crossover, the Arkana.

The product strategy with Arkana is to offer an affordable crossover coupe to customers who aspire to pseudo gravel travel styling, with a sloping roofline.

Built as part of a very complex joint venture between Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi and Daimler, the Arkana’s launch market will be Russia. It combines frontal styling elements from the latest Clio and Koleos with a coupe-like profile and crossover stance.

Renault is launching its Arkana at an equivalent price position of R315 000, for the entry-level front-wheel-drive version. Unfortunately, Renault South Africa has no plans to bring this in, despite its seemingly good value and stylish appearance. Possibly the lack of interest in 'big Renaults' locally has something to do with it as the brand struggles to shift things like Koleos and Megane in meaningful numbers.

New Renault Arkana coupe-SUV set for 2021 UK launch

French firm's sportily styled crossover, revealed at the 2018 Moscow show, will reach UK next year with mild-hybrid and hybrid engines

Renault will expand its UK line-up with the introduction of the Arkana coupe crossover, which will go on sale next year with a range of electrified petrol engines.

The Arkana was launched at the 2018 Moscow motor show, with Renault design chief Laurens van den Acker saying it was intended to offer “a balance between the elegance of a saloon and the powerful stance of an SUV.” While Renault initially said it had no plans to offer the machine in Europe, the continued rise in popularity of SUVs has promoted the firm to add the coupe-styled machine to its line-up alongside the Kadjar and Scenic.

The European versions will be built on the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance’s CMF-B compact car platform, which is also used for the new Clio and Captur, and will be tuned and specced specifically for the market.

Stylish Renault Arkana is for Europe

Renault’s new hybrid Arkana will go on sale in Europe in 2021.

This is Renault’s coupe-crossover called the Arkana which is slated to go on sale in Europe in the first half 2021. Don’t expect to see it in South Africa as its niche styling and selection of hybrid powertrains make it an unsuitable business case for the local market.

Nonetheless, it appears to be quite a striking package from the French carmaker. Apart from its attractive coupe-like sloping roofline, the Arkana features a modern cabin with a large central infotainment touchscreen and digital instrument cluster setting a distinctly upmarket tone. Renault will also offer the Arkana with an RS Line package that’s said to be sportier and more dynamic.

Ten years ago, Renault sold something called a Laguna Coupe. It was genuinely quite pretty – like an Aldi-middle-aisle DB9 – and came with a V6 engine. It sold… disappointingly.

You can’t even get a regular Laguna anymore, never mind a coupe, all thanks to the literal and metaphorical rise of the crossover. Therefore the nearest thing we get to that Smart Price Aston now is this, the Arkana.

Russians have been able to buy it for a little while now, but the Arkana has arrived in the Pride Lands of Western Europe. And in its own special tune, too.

Renault Arkana [EU]

By launching its sporty-looking Arkana SUV in Europe, Renault is reinventing the conventional codes of the market. It becomes the first general-purpose manufacturer to offer a SUV coupé in Europe, a segment that until now has been the preserve of premium brands. This new offering, which complements the other models in the compact range (Mégane, Kadjar and Scénic), is in line with a very fast-growing global SUV market - particularly in the C segment.

With the New Arkana, Renault brings a new generation SUV with a highly advanced hybrid technology, both in its form and function - a reassuring, elevated driving position, spaciousness, without giving up any boot capacity and a distinctive, innovative style. It guarantees a more thrilling and responsive driving experience, especially with the R.S. Line trim design. It also makes no compromises on safety with a maximum score of 5 stars in Euro NCAP crash tests. At the same time, it can carry several types of engines with the latest full-hybrid technology- E-TECH Hybrid 145 hp - and its 1.3 TCe micro-hybrid 12V motors, not to mention the 140 hp and 160 hp versions (as of October 2021).

New Renault Arkana coupe-SUV on sale from £25,300

Sportily styled crossover hits UK dealerships with mild-hybrid and hybrid powertrains

Renault has expanded its UK line-up with the introduction of the Arkana coupé-crossover, which has arrived on sale with a choice of electrified petrol engines, priced from £25,300.

The Arkana was launched at the 2018 Moscow motor show, with Renault design chief Laurens van den Acker saying it was intended to offer “a balance between the elegance of a saloon and the powerful stance of an SUV". While Renault initially said it had no plans to offer the machine in Western Europe, the continued rise in popularity of SUVs has promoted the firm to add it to its line-up alongside the Kadjar and Captur.

The European versions are built on the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance’s CMF-B compact car platform, which is also used for the new Clio and Captur, and will be tuned and specified specifically for the market.

UK buyers are able to choose from a 142bhp 1.6-litre petrol-electric hybrid E-Tech or a turbocharged 1.3-litre petrol engine with 12V mild-hybrid technology and 138bhp.

While coupé-SUV designs are growing in popularity among premium brands, Renault claims the model is the first from a ‘mainstream’ manufacturer to reach Europe. The machine features an SUV-style 190mm ground clearance, along with rugged front and rear skidplates and wheel arches. The five-door also had a swooping, coupé-style profile. It measures 4568mm long and 1571mm high and has a wheelbase of 2720mm.

Renault Arkana 2021 UK review

Should I buy one?

For us and for buyers, the Arkana’s strongest suit is its versatility. It’s roomy, well priced and drives nicely on both short and long hauls.

Its' looks are also more interesting than those of the average square-backed family SUV. It’s easy to see it doing as well in the UK as anywhere else.

A new SUV with coupe in its DNA: the Renault Arkana brings the best of both worlds

• The Arkana is Renault's first purpose-built hybrid car.

• Renault SA confirmed there are no plans, as yet, for local launch.

• The model is powered exclusively by electrified powertrains.

Renault's UK arm introduced the brand's first purpose-built hybrid SUV known as the Arkana.

The range comprises of three trim levels - Iconic, S Edition and R.S. Line - and is powered exclusively by electrified powertrains, reinforcing the brand's electrification strategy.

Renault South Africa confirmed there is no indication of local introduction at the moment.

The offered 1.3 and 1.6-litre petrol engines work in conjunction with E-Tech hybrid powertrains in terms of power. The 1.3-litre produces 104kW and 260Nm, allowing the SUV to run from 0-100km/h in n 9.8 seconds. The 1.6-litre, with a 1.2kWh lithium-ion battery and two electric motors, generates 108kW and 250Nm. The 0-100km/h sprint is done in 10.8 seconds.

Should I buy one?

It’s a shame, because the theory is there for the Arkana to introduce a new type of customer to Renault. It certainly comes in at an attractive price point - this is a lot of car for £29,900. There’s even a 0% APR figure for a PCP purchase.

Despite this, it’s a struggle to see past the engine and chassis foibles. A car that’s better to look at than to drive.

Renault Arkana

WHAT'S THE VERDICT?

“The Arkana doesn't excel anywhere and ultimately feels too clinical”

Without excelling in any particular area, the Arkana ultimately feels like a bit of a clinical focus group-led exercise. There’s no doubt that it will hit the spot for a certain customer who’s not really interested in cars and wants something a little distinctive, but coming from a company that’s been as stylish and challenging in the past as Renault it’s a bit of a disappointment.

The upcoming electric Megane has done a much better job at straddling the look of cars from different categories, but we should probably at least applaud Renault for trying. There’s none of the quirkiness we’ve seen from the French carmaker in the past, though.

Looks like a lovely car. I'd take this over the X4 any day.

Renault Arkana In-Depth UK 2022 Review - Style Over Substance? - OSV

The Renault Arkana strays into a market segment for mid-sized coupe-SUVs previously only occupied by the premium brands.

To compensate for the lack of a posh badge on the bonnet, you get plenty of pavement presence and a dose of Renault latest hybrid technology, with both mild hybrid and full-hybrid petrol powerplants on offer.

As for the inside, well here's where the efforts made to imbue recent smaller models with extra cabin quality have paid off, enabling Renault to push up-market using the same interior technology.

The result is a surprisingly polished proposition.
