So i am looking at buying a new car (R200k - R220 mark). I have been looking at the Kia Cerato and the ix35 (bit more than above price range) It seems that the people on here don't have to many problems with either of the cars.

Then this morning i came across the new Renault Fluence, and i must admit i like it a lot...

Price starts out at R199k for the 1600 and R 244k for 2L (Cerato 1600 is R185k and 2L is R205)

http://www.renault.co.za/cars/fluence/home.html

i currently drive a Renault, and have never had problems

Bit of specs: 1600 model (2L model has 105kw and 195 torque)

Displacement (cc) 1598
Power (kW @ rpm) 81 @ 6000
Torque (NM @ rpm) 156 @ 4400

its got all the normal gadgets (ipod connectivity, steering controls for radio, GPS etc etc)

so what do you guys / girls think of this car

Cerato's better value IMO, and will probably have better resale value. I see the Renault also has a 5 year / 150 000km warranty which is always a Good Thing. Question: does it have to be new?

It doesn't look to bad but is it a proper Renault or a Dacia rebadge?

I would go for the Cerato though.

Here's the wiki page.

It's very much in the mould of the Cerato - it is also sold as the Samsung SM3, the previous generation of which was, far as I recall, built by Renault Samsung in Korea. It doesn't look too shabby given the price, but the name? Renault... eh... Flatulence? What?

I'd go for the Cerato, it is a brilliant car in every aspect. If you want something a little more unique and you can actually spend R220k you should have a look at the new Astra.

OT

Saw my 1st new Astra in traffic this morning. Very reminiscent of a SEAT Leon to my eye, especially the facelift that we never saw here. Doesn't look terrible. ;)

I wouldn't say "brilliant" but it is a lot of car for the money.

Well, brilliant in terms of value for money, and looks wise too. Sure Kia is not a premium brand so that is not brilliant perhaps, but they are known for good quality cars - like most Korean cars are.

About the new Astra, it also looks similar to the Megane Coupe in some ways which, like the Leon, is not a bad car to look like. Personally I feel it is a mix of the Astra G and the new Insignia that influenced it most.

I have heard of some recent complaints on newish models, but in general their quality is much better than it was in the 90's. Used I would think carefully before buying one with high mileage but new models are pretty good. The Corsa D came 3rd in the 2010 JD Quality survey (behind the Jazz and Mazda2), but still well ahead the competition from Germany.

That being said if quality is paramount you need to look at cars from the Japan and Korea, they have a very solid reputation on quality.

Did some reading online, seems this is a common issue with diesel Renaults. It's a clogged diesel particulate filter, caused by lots of short journeys. The solution can be as easy as just taking it for a long steady drive on a highway.

Don’t buy it. I really do believe there are much better options than this. My worry is things like part availability given it’s a Frenchie that wasn’t that popular here.
