Renault Kiger (cross between a Kwid & a Triber)

5 small (sub-four-metre) crossovers coming to South Africa in 2021

As many as five new baby crossovers are scheduled to arrive in South Africa in 2021, each imported from India.

Since vehicles measuring less than four metres in length attract tax benefits in India, these imported small crossovers all fall into that category.

The local market already features the likes of the Hyundai Venue and Mahindra XUV300, but competition in the segment is set to grow substantially in 2021. And each of these fresh-faced competitors has the potential to add significant momentum to their respective stable’s sales volumes.

Here’s what to expect...

1. Kia Sonet

2. Nissan Magnite

3. Renault Kiger

4. Suzuki Vitara Brezza

5. Toyota Urban Cruiser

Renault Kiger 1.0L Turbo-petrol Driving Report - Team-BHP

With the Kiger, Renault has a genuine shot at shooting past Toyota & Honda and doing 13,000 - 15,000 sales / month.

The Kwid & very intelligent Triber already bring in a couple of thousand sales each month, while the Kiger will only add to that tally further.

The Kiger is the Nissan Magnite's close sibling and the two are almost the same under the skin.

The Kiger is offered with two engine options – a 1.0L, 71 BHP naturally aspirated petrol and a 1.0L, 99 BHP turbo-petrol. Both are offered with a 5-speed manual transmission as standard and get the option of an AMT for the naturally aspirated version or a smooth CVT for the turbo-petrol.

Ex-showroom prices start at Rs. 5.45 lakh for the base variant and go up to Rs. 9.55 lakh for the top-end 1.0 turbo-petrol CVT.

As long as the Kriger has better fuel consumption than the Triber, that thing is basically 10l per 100km with city driving as you have to work that motor.

Renault Sandero to be dropped from South African line-up

Last year Renault’s Dacia brand pulled the covers off the third-generation Sandero hatchback, along with its Stepway crossover variant, and at the time Renault South Africa could not confirm whether the new range was destined for South Africa.

However we now have confirmation that the Romanian-built newcomer is not earmarked for our market. At a media conference held in Johannesburg recently, Renault South Africa announced that the Sandero would effectively be replaced by the Indian-sourced Kiger compact SUV that’s due to hit local showrooms around September this year.

The Kiger is essentially Renault’s version of the Nissan Magnite that was launched in South Africa last month. Although it has different exterior styling, the two are both built on the Alliance’s CMF-A+ platform, and powered by a new 1-litre, three-cylinder turbopetrol engine that produces 74 kW. Renault also offers a 53 kW normally aspirated version of this engine.

Incidentally the new Dacia Sandero, which would have worn a Renault badge in South Africa, is also based on a version of the CMF platform, albeit with more in the way of Clio DNA. Yet given that the Stepway crossover versions tend to be the most popular, the new Sandero would have clashed with the Kiger in the company’s local line-up, Renault SA says.
