2006 Renault Megane 2.0T @ R 139 995

Black , 93 000 km , Petrol, Hatchback, 5 Doors, Manual 6 speed, Full service history, Major service done at 90 000kms, Please call . . .

Is this a good buy? I'm not specifically referring to the price but the make & model of the car.
A good friend who has quite a wealth of motoring knowledge said I should stay away from Renaults, especially high mileage Renaults with a turbo ...and that saying "Friends don't let their friends buy French cars" comes to mind.

What do you guys think?

My wife has a high mileage Renault. It hasn't given any problems, but we did drop R11.5k on a major service last year and another R1.6k on fixing the aircon condenser this year. And that's only a 1.4 Modus. Repair bills on a 2.0T might be scary.

I think I'm inclined to agree with him

in case of a major repair

set aside a 100k just in case you need to do a major fix

its a pretty nippy car, and its probably not had a good life.
I would not go near it, not just because its a renault, but because its a turbo "performance" car, and is usually only sold when things are going wrong.

If it was under 15000km, then maybe, start going past that, and u wonder why they are selling. Possibly finances, more than likely they have hurt it/ driven into something.

At that price I don't think its too bad - sure french cars has a bit of bad rep, but not more than BM or Mercedes with high mileage... Just remember that it is classified as a "sports" model being higher power output (turbo) - and generally has been driven as such... The one major problem with Renault specifically is that parts take 2 weeks to procure from overseas - they don't keep stock... So depending on it as a daily runner is a bit risky

Possibly with the older models, i am not sure. But renault has seriously turned it around with parts availability now (on new models at least, old ones i am not sure)

15000km is nothing... its when you get the first service. You'll have to search far and wide to find any 2006 model car with 15000km on it...

Well personally I won't buy ANY "hot hatch" second hand. Every hot hatch is murdered. That said, I am a fan of the Renault Clio. I think these are bombproof cars, but I can be corrected. Had a chat with a guy who owns a Clio II Sport and he himself says that he is not kind to his car, but takes immaculate care of the car. He says that he has had zero problems with the car and will buy a Renault any day.

I think any performance hatch has been nailed. Like buying a 1999 M3....that car is a bullet, but expensive to repair. That's just how it is. Guys will tell you to stay away from any DSG GTi with more tha 100k km on the clock...take your pick...

ur missing my point, i was talking about a performance car in general, not a 2006 renault in particular.
Buying a performance car second hand is asking for problems, because you just never know.

:erm: ... ok. Thanks for the replies!
So the 'general' consensus is stay away from it :p
Personally I don't consider it a performance car - I'd consider the Renault Megane F1/Sport as a performer.

I'd prefer a hatchback - something smallish, sporty and fun to drive. And the following are out of the question: mini, ST, GTi (all for their own various reasons).

My pick would be the ST. :D

AFAIK the engines are pretty bullet-proof, but I honestly don't know about servicing costs and the like :p

I had a 2006 Focus 1.6Si and besides the sluggishness of the 1600 motor, I was happy with the build quality and sporty handling.
Apparently the ST is rather heavy on juice even under 'normal' driving. I'm also trying to keep my 'trend' of not buying the same make of car more than once (strange, I know).

+1 for the ford.

I know this isn't what you wanted to hear, but my friend bought one brand new and had endless shyte with it. Then again, when my VW was giving problem, he came to the rescue. :D

That said, I just bought a 2002 Clio RS, so... :wtf:

:wtf: ...and any French horror stories so far?
I dunno hey, I just find the Megane sexy, not too common (like the GTi and to a lesser extent, the ST) and intriguing to a weird degree. And a mini just wouldn't be practical for me.

Only getting it on friday. :(

They are pretty and not that slow, but ja... My friend came to visit me the one day and when he wanted to leave, the car wouldn't start. :D They had to pick it up with a flatbed.

If you want, I can ask him and then pm his number to you and you can talk to him...

I had a Megane 2.0 T , I sold it due to high maintenance costs , every month a new problem. I found bad back-up service from Renault.

Clio RS is an iconic car...honestly...
