When Vodacom launched the 3G service in SA December 2004, I went and signed up. My 2yr contract expired a few months ago, I want to renew now, but dont need another HSDPA Datacard.

I want to get a phone that I can use instead (my laptop now has HSDPA built in), the vodashop stores (tried a few) say this is impossible, has anyone managed to get a phone instead of another card?

Why don't u just buy Data-bundles?? (or do a addon to your normal cellphone contract)

Yeah, don't renew that data contract. Rather take out a new contract that will give you the phone you want, and then get a prepaid sim for your data card and load bundles onto it. If prepaid is a hassle, get the 4u month-to-month contract.

You might need to in the near future, I dont thing your card is 3G+ HSDPA speeds of 3.6MB + so when that comes about, then you can upgrade to the newer cards that allow those speeds!;)

Or u can always sell your Current HSDPA card for cash, and get the newest model on your new contract ??

A progressive Vodashop will be able to help you. I've seen them do this in the past. Where are you based?

Do NOT renew

Do NOT renew your contract...

The new USB will be obsolete when network speeds increase to 3.6Mbs, and again later when it increases to 7.2Mbs.

I tried the "rather get a new phone" route. Even with V3G's assistance I could not get VSP to do it.

Strange, must be a comms breakdown somewhere. The owner of the vodashop in question told me they had everything ready for you?

You can either upgrade to the E220 USB modem (capable of speeds up to 3.6 mb as opposed to your datacard which has a max speed of 1.8 mb) or you can choose a phone, the value of which is limited to the same cost as a datacard (the cost price and not the selling price).

You would get a better (higher value) phone if you either cancelled that line, as previously recommended, ((or converted it to the 4u contract where there is no subscription and the data bundle (for 500mb) costs only R189 as opposed to the R249 it was costing on 3G500mb - which included the modem)) - and took out another contract, such as a weekender plus or one of the topup contracts.

The trick with the Vodashops, should you want to just upgrade/renew the data contract with a phone to the same value as a modem/datacard, is to tell them you know it is not available on their normal upgrade system, but that they must email the lady in charge of issuing dealsheets (they should know who this is) to create the deal for them. Obviously this can only be done in working hours, and may take a few hours to come through.

Hope you come right....:) :)

There's a couple of phones with HSDPA capabilities, but I dont think they are available in SA as yet.

I am using a Motorola RAZR V6 Maxx as a HSDPA modem since 23 March 2007, it is working quite well. Cost me nothing on a Business per second contract from VodacomSP.
