Replacing the original car key (Programmable) for Toyota Corolla

where can i make a spare key. I stay in Pretoria. I hear that it is around R2000. Where can i get it cheaper. :confused:
 
I have the same question but for a 2003 RunX (same key as Corolla).
Those keys where made to break. :mad:
There must be after market equivalents around.
 
If they are transponder keys, then suck it up and go to the dealership.
 
those are normally only avail at the branded dealers.

Is it R2k for the key and programming or is that the key only.
Normally these dealers charge RX for the key, AND R1hour labour to program the key/remote to the car. Meaning R2k, plus say R500, plus the related VAT (make sure to have your other set of keys/remotes with when booking in the car).
 
This very important to have a spare key. Imagine this scenario: You have a tracker on your Runx and Insurance. Imagine if you get hijacked and the robbers take your last key. lets say the tracker find your car but obviously you wont get your key. Do you know how much is to create key from scratch more than R10 000...I really need to do this as in yesterday.

That is just the casing though, you obviously transferred the contents from the old casing into the new one.

Toyota won't sell you just the casing, they will sell you a whole new key.

From what I've heard :
If you lose the last remaining key then Toyota need to replace the entire computer box (whatever they call it).
They have to use the old key to get the computer to accept a new key.

It's probably some sort of rolling code setup where once you lose the sync between the pseudo random number generators (PRNG) in the computer and key you're stuck.

What the agents charge for replacement keys is insane though (as it most of their prices).
Just the normal consumer gouging process.

That also sounds like rubbish to me...

I know with my old Merc, I just had to provide the VIN number, and the next day a key was delivered to me.... they didn't need to touch or see the vehicle.

my car needs to be present with both sets of keys if and when say a remote needs replacing. As the remaining old one and the new one needs to be programmed together, else the "missing" one stops eorking.

happened when I bought the used car from a dealer.
I requested that they replace the broken remote cover as part of the purchase agreement. They ended up replacing the whole remote.
"sure, bring the car to us on Xdate"
I take the car to workshop on agreed date. Book the car in.
get the car back. Next day I decide to use the remaining older remote, keeping the new one nice....
I could not unlock the car, I had to fetch the new remote, that worked.
Phoned the workshop
"you should have booked in both keys...."
"thanks for telling me now"
 
But if you lose both keys, I'm pretty sure the dealer can order a new one and program it to the control box in the car, they shouldn't need to replace the entire control box.

two keys at R2500 exvat(each), plus labour at R500 exvat/hour for programming. And that is just the remotes, not for the keys.
And I tried requesting a third key & remote, with the intentions of storing it safely.
"sorry the system will kick out the 1st unit when adding the 3rd..."

There are many components to replace:

Transponder
Transponder syncing
Key
Key cutting

I am in the same position. Toyota Corolla. I have 1 key and need to make a copy.
I am in Jhb, any recommendations other than a dealership?

7 years ago Audi quoted me R26,000 for 2 new transponder keys. Original keys were stolen in a house robbery. Luckily insurance paid for it.
That price included the coding etc from Germany, as well as new door locks, boot lock, glove compartment lock.
