Well, Ive just been steaming about Telkom lately. Especially since I just got adsl last month and have been loving it,...now these new prices. Well, I sent them a mail just basically venting my anger about prices, world trends, comparisons between here and the UK, US, Asia. I mentioned how regular users (not companies) in the UK can have 1Mb lines for less than our 384k lines. This is the reply I got, although it is relatively friendly in nature,...im still not happy and wont be anytime soon:

Dear anonymous

Your mail has been received and your comments noted.

You should remember that hate is a passion too and it is with the same passion that we have rolled out our services to the market and might I add, amongst great competition. The South African market has never had this much choice when it comes to voice and IP services.

U don't need a land line today, U have three cell phone providers and U don't need a Telkom IP related product, U have a choice. As for broadband options, there are even more choices, Sentech, iBurst and 3G to mention but a few. Choice is wonderful and U are fully empowered to move to any of these alternatives.

From our side, we try really hard to run a great ISP, with trained staff and suitably prices services. The problem being that as Telkom, our staff are highly sort after in the IP market, so no sooner are they trained and up and running, our various competitors poach them.

As a dial-up subscriber, we are second to Mweb, who are double our price on dial-up.

As for DSL, we are not the only ISP in the world who offer usage based service and I am sure we wont be the last. What the future holds, I have no idea if we will stay on the model, I really cant tell U that it's here to stay or go. You have to look at cause and effect, and prior to the current change there was a simple 3 Gig service with unlimited local access, once past the cap. Well if everybody played by the same rules from the start, we would not be having this e-mail conversation.

The only thing I can assure is that it will change ... again, cheaper faster and more services, of these I am almost positive. It's a world wide trend and we will follow best practices to maintain competitiveness.

So don't hate us for too long, we really want to keep U as a client at some stage of your IP or voice related requirements.

Oh and just btw, we made top 10 in most love company in SA.

That's probably because they came first in the "fixed-line telecommunications" category :D

Good one...I really laughed my ass off on this side. Well until they become cheaper and provide better services...again...I'll be downgrading my
1mbit.

Thanks for showing us that email. The person who replied to you, needs to be strangled.

taken straight out of school are they, it's "sought" after not "sort" after :P

uhm, that's because 99% of the people that voted for you, can't afford your costs to get informed about you. All it takes is a pretty advert on TV to get the masses to think you're the best company ever - even when you rape them daily.

our various competitors poach them
I'm not even going to comment on that.

You have got to be kidding me right! How they hell can they send that to you! They can be ripped to shreds from so many angles with a reply like that its not even funny.. Its Hilarious!

What choice do we have.. in the end all roads lead to telkom. They are the ones that make the choice. Sentech, iBurst and 3G all need the Sat3 cable to leave the country. What a load of bull

I dont know how you worded your letter and I know my spelling and grammer is not something to smile at. But who ever wrote that email reply to you has an obligation to their customers and as a professional institution (yes its an oxymoron but still) to reply to you in a professional manner. I wonder what my boss would say if I had to start replying to my clients with "U" for you.

The only good thing about that was the "promise" (who ever it was did assure you) that prices would change and become cheaper... of course there was no mention of time.. So see you in 2015

Thanks, I know who wrote that mail, same song. Does not explain why the country get ripped of by all the broadband providers. Only flicker of hope is the comment about change. ADSL worldwide is cheaper than Wireless in my understanding, Not so in ZA. Why because of such complacent attitudes by Telkom an seen in the e-mail.

Man you guys make me laugh. Afrikaans is the best. In no other language can you make something sound so funny. A bit off topic, but I just had to say something. Oh yeah and Telkom sucks @ss. :D

This is truth as twisted by Telkom.

What Telkom does not say is that the competition does not have a choice: They have to get there bandwidth from Telkom.

Twisting the truth is nothign better than lying!
