A Republican Senate hopeful has sparked outrage by suggesting that "legitimate rape" rarely results in pregnancy due to a woman's biological defences.


Todd Akin, a member of the House of Representatives and recently appointed Senate nominee for Missouri, made the claim during an interview in which he attempted to explain his no-exceptions policy in regards to abortion.

In reference to pregnancy resulting from rape, Akin told KTVI-TV: "First of all, from what I understand from doctors, that is really rare."

He continued: "If it is a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try and shut that whole thing down."

But if that "didn't work", then the punishment should be "on the rapist and not attacking the child", Akin added.

A video clip of the interview soon went viral, leading to online criticism directed at the Republican politician.

Akin recently won the GOP nomination for a Senate seat that he is currently favourite to win.
The incumbent senator he hopes to beat, Democrat Claire McCaskill, was among those who rebuked him online as the term "legitimate rape" began trending on Twitter.

"As a woman & former prosecutor who handled 100s of rape cases, I'm stunned by Rep Akin's comments about victims this AM," she tweeted.

Medical studies in the US suggest that 5% of rapes result in the victim becoming pregnant, with around 32 000 pregnancies in the US every year being the result of rape.

In a statement, Akin later claimed that he "misspoke" and that his off-the-cuff remarks did not "reflect the deep empathy I hold for the thousands of women who are raped and abused every year".

But the fallout from the remarks may have already damaged his prospects in the Missouri race and will give encouragement to Democrats who fear losing the senate seat in the forthcoming general election. – © Guardian News and Media 2012

Actually, this has been a long time perspective of the Republican/Conservative/Fundamental Christians.

He is not making it up on the fly, this is what they actually believe.

And I don't think he is condoning rape, I think he means where actual penetration occurs during rape.

He obviously meant rape that is not a false accusation when he talks of legitimate rape, so he is suggesting that false accusation is a significant % of the rape stats.

That's what I said. He means rape where actual penetration occurs and probably ejaculation as well.

It is possible for a person to be found guilty of rape without penetration in the USA, but that percentage would be irrelevant to the discussion as pregnancy is not likely to occur.

he should have used a different term other than "legitimate rape"... that was an unfortunate and dumb term to use, but yeah... we know what he meant.

Well false rape accusations are a far bigger problem than people like to make out. I know rape is awful but surely ruining someones life out of being vindictive etc is equally repugnant ?

Also a woman can have and enjoy sex she willingly agrees to and afterwards when she sobers up/ guys pisses her off etc decide it was not consentual and the law actually would support her case for rape.

The more worrying part is that this moron is a leader in the States. And he believes that women's bodies can automatically prevent pregnancies in case of rape. First Santorum, now this douche.

Rep. Jeff Flake, who is running for Senate in Arizona, tweeted that Akin's comment was "wrong."
"I oppose abortion, but exceptions must be made for rape, incest and to protect the life of the mother," he said.

So what is the Republican stance on pro-life ?

Life is life and must be protected at all costs but if it's rape or incest or to protect the life of the mother then all of a sudden life is not life ?

The official Republican stance is as you quoted it. It allows for the exceptions.
But there are a number of more conservative and fundamentalist Christians within the party who do not allow for the exceptions.
