Our company is planning to create SMS competitions for our members, but we have no idea where to start, or what pit falls to look out for.

I thought it would be best to ask this question here, seeing that people on this site actually knows what they talk about.

Thanks

First, don't do it. It's freaking annoying.
But, if you have to:

Transparency and Value for Money are your 2 key factors.

If the competitor knows exactly what is going on, their position in the "rankings" and how exactly to win, then the competitor will not get al angry and may actually enjoy the game.

Value for money can be achieved by handing out MANY smaller prizes as the competition moves onwards. Also, value for money can be immediately visible when the competitor sends in an entry by the type of information sent back from the competition system.

Try to make the games a maximum of 2 weeks long.

This country is ripe for scam competitions like Brainbox on eTV. The law is slow and useless and eveyone is trying it on everywhere.

Your company cellc ?, first vodacom with a rip off competition, now mtn with a rip off competition, who's left over cellc and virgin ready to milk the public

there are more companies out there than the 4 cell networks.... plus he said it was a competition amongst their members.... too me that doesnt scream spam or scam. eg a competition amoungst a gyms members????

If he was a spammer would he have told us ...and expected a reply?

instant win is better than a game

I totally agree with this - my advice is dont do a game - these are getting such bad publicity right now. Rather do an instant win competition with lots of small prizes so people will keep entering but they will still have a fair chance of winning each time and don't feel cheated.

Another way to increase your response rate is to keep your price band low like R2,50.
