Hi guys: pardon me if this is not the right place to ask this:

I am in need of a device that i can use XBMC on. Wan to use it on my TV, IT needs to have a remote

Those HP micro servers are quite popular for HTPC builds I hear. I've got friends who use Raspberry Pi's but I've never been a fan :) I ended up just building a custom PC in a HTPC case and then using a bluetooth remote and having the Android app installed on my phone/tablet.

Raspberry Pi .... (B model - for network interface), install RaspBMC. Use your cellphone as the remote... Depending on the type of cell u have (android for me), I use allcast and or Twonkey to stream media directly to the your TV via the Pi.

Are they still available? I need to replace my old P4 which I'm using as an HTPC as its getting long in the tooth.

I was thinking of buying a microserver or something equivalent to it.

Grab a Raspberry Pi... connect it to your HDMI port, grab power from your tv's USB port... throw a copy of openelec on a sd card... tape it to you back of your tv... And you'll have silent out of sight solution.

Remote... If you have a tv which supports HDMI-CEC... i.e. Sony, Samsung, LG... you will not need a remote... just use your Tv's remote.. otherwise grab a budget usb remote... (http://www.pifactory.co.za/node/42)

Additional... depending on the media you'd like to watch, consider buying a license for Mpeg2 and VC1 decoding on your PI... +-R50 bucks extra.

I have a DroidTV which is basically a Android device designed to be used as a streaming device as playing back media either via XBMC or Android apps. XBMC is installed when it arrives and has a standard remote. You can also purchase a gyro remote which acts like a mouse pointer" or "finger touch" as if device is a tablet.

AVSupply is a local seller, and support and service is outstanding.

This depends entirely on your budget, whether you plan to skin XBMC, what your hardware requirements are, what OS you plan to run, whether the box will stream and transcode or act as a file server for other boxes, and what content you expect to play through XBMC. Not all devices are equal, and XBMC won't magically make a low-end machine handle your bluray and 3d rips for example...

pi's are sloooooow......

Good point. I am also looking for a hardware device that handles XBMC and not too keen on a PC-based one due to power and noise concerns (I assume they are noiser and take more power than embedded boxes?)

I also heard that Pi can't handle full on streaming and interface is not as responsive as as on a PC (understandable).

So is the AndroidTV from avsupply quote good then and responsive?

Hi nic777,

If XBMC is all you are after, I highly recommend the DroidTV with the standalone Linux XBMC firmware. It has a 1080p interface, is very responsive, has smooth SD & HD playback, and all the addons run very well

If you decide to get one, I'll pre-install the fusion repository and add all the free IPTV addons for you

I personally run the Linux firmware, and it's awesome :)

Streaming is ok, its just a little unresponsive but then im using my tv remote through hdmi pass through or something to the pi. you can also overclock it, I'll try that and give some feedback.

Yeah, I find it pretty good, very capable little device.
