Hello,

What is the general concensus around the Ipads? Can you actually replace books with these devices?

What are the negative points regarding using these Ipads, examply are they prone to falling, heavy, bad lighting, bad battery life, lots of problems regarding copyright material etc.

Secondly, What printer could you advise for someone to buy which has cheap generic toner cartridges, are there any good models at the moment for which I could look out for?

Cheers

Hello Monkey, Well anything that is economical. If I could buy a toner cartridge (Generic) and it print over 1500 pages then I would say its a hit.

Just don't know which model printer to go for.
I hear Generics cost between R300 - 400

Is sounds like you are looking at replacing a notebook which would be a bad idea i reckon. Anything apple will have copyright issues, you will be limited to that device.

Look around there are several ipad clones that are better and the ipad 2 is on the way so google a bit before you go blow 8k and find out ipad 2 will be launched in a month :D. Don't think the ipad will replace a notebook because it won't.

I'm not trying to sub a laptop for an ipad.

My thoughts went between a NETBOOK and an IPAD because they have superior battery life and easily portable

Do you mean paper books?

LCD screens don't make for a good reading medium imho.

yeah my sentiments too..

I was hoping there was something unique about these Ipads :'(

Apart from the apple nope it is pretty much a useless device in my opinion, more of a trophy must have sit in the cupboard for years device :D, i have bought way to many of those over the years

You would be better of with a tool designed for the job. Those eBook readers use specific type of display technology to make reading easier.

I would die if I had to read a book on a lcd and I have tried. For now I will stick with the tried and tested paper model.

I felt pretty much the same way but once I tried it I loved it. My books have by in large been boxed up, packed away, and been replaced by downloaded electronic versions. The beauty of having an electronic library is that I can continue where I left off on different devices. The nice thing about the iPad as a ebook is the backlit display at night. The glaring (pun intended) downside is reading in bright sunlight.

bwana so what have you used? Which is preferred when reading in shade (under a tree, or on a porch with semi lighted surroundings).

Cheers

I'm sitting in the sun right now typing this on my iPad so it can't be all that bad ;)

To me a device like the kindle makes less sense because while it does one thing well, ebooks, that's all it excels at. Since I offloaded Friday night's cricket photos onto my laptop I've barely touched it since, everything else I've done on the iPad.

too pad the ibad only has 16 gig sd card on the entry level model.

I'd only settle for 120 gigs so I can also store some movies, music and stuff on there aswell..

I believe they could incorporate this but they want to have something to market with and make more money somehow :>

I've got 10-15 movies on mine at any given time, mostly things to keep the kids entertained for long journeys. To me the physical size of the device works against it as an MP3 player* though, my ipod is way better suited for that.

*By the way that is my same reasoning for being so dismissive of a rear facing camera on the iPad2. Seriously, how big a twit do you want to look taking a photo with that! :D
