Hello all

so just a feeler for now

i need to start saving after i get some advice

I want to go solar but not sure where to start and with ever increasing prices and options

I have a 3 bedroom with 2 bathrooms and a seperate entrance
  • 2 geysers and a pool pump
  • no aircons (plans for later in the year depending on budget)
  • no dishwasher (plans also for sometime this year)
  • 2 fridges
  • 2 deep freezers
  • 2 microwaves
  • outdoor LED floodlights
  • a borehold pump
  • normal lighting inside the house
  • 3 Tvs
  • 2 Xboxes
electricity bill is around R2k for the month

I have a tiled roof and my garage has a flat roof and we pretty much get decent sun from morning to night

what should i be looking for in terms of inverter and batteries and how many solar panels

thank you

5kVa Inverter. 12 Panels. Schitload of batteries.

What's your budget ?

UV light if you have/suspect some kak in the water.

DO NOT GO 5KW inverter go 8KW its the difference between constant monitoring and carrying on with life as normal my system will work for you.

The system is also big enough to run everything oven stove etc on maybe cut a battery or two if needed.

so ours isnt a borehold thats 100m deep. we have 6m deep water
That's a well point and you can still drink from there if you filter it accordingly and test it every now and then..

As for solar and budget, start with the appliances that you want powered during loadshedding or from solar power and get the total power draw for those appliances.. that is your starting point and you can always scale up at a later stage to include more appliances, provided you spec inverter for that..

yours is probably around R250k by now

if i had to put a budget say R130k or so would that be do-able

I have similar energy demands.

8KVA Inverter, 2 X 100ah Batteries, 8 X 550W Panels

Everything except the geyser and oven are on the Inverter.

Life carries on as normal, no stress of overload, slight adjustment to habits.

R185k all in

Isn't there an option to save for part of it and pay the rest through your bond.

If you're a lot of spending money, you should do it properly. 8 kW inverter, 2 x 5 kWh batteries and 6 kWp worth of panels for a start. You can expand on that later depending on how much you use.

Would you spend R130k on a Tata when you could get a BMW for R200k...
