Requirements to connect HD PVR

Hi,

I have 2 satellite plugs in the wall. I actually think that this is enough to be able to connect a HD PVR (in combination with a 2 to 4 multi switch) but the people at game and similar keep on telling me I need to ask someone who knows about the buildings satellite installation whether it will work or not but he wasn't able to tell me about any details. Also the DSTV hotline just tells me I have to ask someone whether HD will work. Can anyone tell me what they are talking about? If I have 2 connections it should work, shouldn't it?
 
The 2 connectors could be:
2 satellite feeds as you hope
1 satellite feed, 1 radio or aerial feed
1 satellite feed, 1 going through to another room

So if you still want to guess rather then asking the body corporate then its your decision
 
plug it in and see...

I'm kinda sure that it won't tho. From a body corporate point of view it makes no sense to terminate two separate lnb signals in one apartment.
 
Both satellite connectors in the lounge work, aerial and radio is separate. I definitely have two connections. Other people in the building have the old PVR and/or dual view. All apartments are the same.
 
One feed could be enough though, it all depends how its setup. I ran my HDPVR for a year with 1 feed through a multiswitch without any problems

If others have a SDPVR working with the 2 then its likely that the HDPVR will work with a multiswitch. It will work without a multiswitch as well, just connect up tuners 1 & 4, you wont be able to record though
 
On the developer website it says: • Internet connections and DStv connections in all rooms per flat
 
going to the satellite installation room now to check. I didn't move to what they say is supposed to be most exclusive apartment building in the cape and then I can't even have an HD PVR... that's a no go

if both work , test it independently, then sure it will work with a multi switch, no offence to the guys at game and mono choice, but they are tuaght a script and need to follow it, probably not allowed or cant think independantly of it :(
just buy one of those Dual view to HD PVR kits from Makro(r500) all the wires are all precut and you can do it in a jiffy, im not sure its available elswhere in a read form.
it is cheaper to buy stuff elswehre cheaper and put it togehter (i did that and shoo my blisters :) ) but this i figure is quick easy and painless

Thanks isie, that's exactly what I thought as well. I did test both connections independently and it works. I just wanted to go to check in the room where all the cables come down but it is closed now. They obviously realised that someone is sneaking around every now and then ;-)

So I will go this week and get a HD PVR. I can't take the normal decoder with its crappy video chinch connection anymore. The picture quality sucks so badly.
 
if i were to buy a hd dstv decoder and wanted to watch it on multiple tv's do i have to get the extraview function? (i only want HD on 1 tv and the rest im happy with SD...)

if you want to watch 2 seperate dstv chanels at once then yes you need extraview,(as you want to watch supersport in the lounge and the wife series in the bedroom) but if you just need only 1 chanel (you live alone or in a perfect home where every one watches to gether :) ) then no you dont

at the end of the day you might as well go for extra view as the subscription is the same

Just check when is the next HD decoder being released.. I heard they're busy making a new one - we got our Dual View like 2 months before they released the HD decoder - dont make the same mistake.
 
Thx Linux, I realised there are 2 different ones available now, PACE and UEC. Will check and see whether something new is announced.

Not anytime soon, will probably be 2 years before anything new, which is likely to be a HDPVR with view 1, record 1

Linux you didnt make a mistake :) you were lucky,
the SD pvr is much better then the HD PVR (if you dont have an HD TV)

Question: Would the HD PVR give you better quality on the normal DSTV channels? I think not.

I would advise the UEC (silver one), it has a couple small bugs that the Pace doesnt but I'm confident these will fixed. The advantages of the UEC which wont be fixed anytime soon in the Pace are better RF quality, faster in general & doesn't have HDCP problems

That is so wrong depending on the TV you use. The video connection the standard decoder uses, which is RCA is so incredibly bad compared to SCART, S-VHS, component, DVI or HDMI. I am connecting it to a 50" Pioneer Plasma and trust me, the difference is like day and night. So yes, even the standard DSTV channels will be of much better quality, also the on screen display will be much clearer.

You will certainly not see much of a difference on a normal CRT TV.
