Hey Guys and Gals

Doing a research project for my IS course at UCT and wondering if anyone could help me with any leads.

How does Neotel prevent unauthorised access of data transmitted wirelessly?
Also the prevention of people accessing other's accounts and using their cap?

Secondly, how do they detect this?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Chad, welcome man

First thing about understanding security is to understand what CDMA is and how it works: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Code_division_multiple_access.

-Communications Through the network use a Pseudo Random Code.
-Each device has a 64 Bit encryption key (A-Key).
-CDMA uses CAVE (Cellular Authentication and Voice Encryption), a 128-Bit sub-Key generated called “Shared Secret Data” (SSD).

1. Answer Above, depending on what type of package, wireless security would also depend on the clients setup I.E if your wireless router is available publicly you will have problems.
2. Each device has a unique A-Key which would be tied into the User Account information in turn locking Account access to that device.

GL in your research

As Kasbah said, each phone/flex device gets a card, something like a SIM card. On there are the codes for the encryption. This "smart card" identifies the phone/flex router to the neotel head office. That way, you and only you can use that device. Good thing is that this "ID" for you phone/flex is that they tie that into your account. The device only works with one account. That way you control very specifically who and who doesn't use that account and device.

But, that's just for the device. Sharing the connection without a WEP key on a wireless network means any Jan can take a laptop, park in front of your house, connect to the WLAN and use your interwebz. Sorta defeats the object of all the account security though.... unless you are uncapped :D

Thanks

Thanks guys

That is a huge help. I will go and read up on those points you bring up. This will really go a long way to making sure I get some fact down on paper.

THANKS :)
