Resignation, when is the right time.

Well on that case she'll be leaving the UK and getting a free ride around the world. Lol

are you resigning because your gf left SA? What if she left because of you?

#justasking

hehehe, this did give me a good chuckle...

Well me and my gf have been looking to go overseas for some time now, Just never had the cash or opportunity to do so. Her mom is now living in the UK and she is going to be going there before me to get settled slightly and ill be coming over in october when her/our dog is ready to travel aswell. definitely not breaking apart and she definitely didnt leave cos of me:p

Don't burn bridges, but your company has no loyalty to you. You have to do what is right for yourself.
But do it before they send you on the training.

I worked with a guy who let the company send him for 2 weeks of training in Sydney, then came back and resigned.
Later found out he'd actually accepted the new offer 2 weeks before the training.
Left all of us in the lurch, as he was supposed to be on-site at a new client. I had to take his place and it ultimately was the main reason I resigned.

Out of interest, how does one get promoted to the position of techie? Were you the office cleaner or something prior to that? :p

rofl!! yea, they made me do dishes all day:( and wash cars :p

Well, i guess it's kind of a promotion, I was on the support desk for the internet side of the company, now i've been re-positioned to the maintenance/IT side of the company and now im a field tech instead of sitting taking calls all day, so sort of a promotion but not really either.

Well, just a heads up about that then. You're going to struggle to get a position as either a support desk guy or techie abroad. This is second hand information I got from a buddy who spent a year over there two years ago. He ended up working in a hospital doing dishes, before deciding to come back.

And he had MSCE, A+ and N+.

Make sure you think this through and that you're not only going there for your GF

yea, I have seen the IT market there is a bit difficult to get into, I am not too reliant on doing IT only, I can also do call center work if needed, I can be a driver, I can be a mechanic, I can be a warehouse assistant or manager. few things I reckon I can go do there, it's just about finding anything really then looking around for what I want once I got something. But it isnt the reason im going, I've wanted to go their since I was in high school for many many reasons.

Mostly for the internet speeds, the International events that we just dont get enough of here, The free medical is a huge upside as well, a life experience that I have never had (never been overseas so really wanna give it a go and what better place to start because Ill have my british passport soon hopefully). Also if my gf can just even get a job we are already a step forward. She isn't black so she cant find a job here, Every job she gets offered is for sales, and well if you cant afford a car you cant do sales. If you dont have a car, how do you get to work, if you dont work how do you pay to study, if you dont have qualifications how do you get work. it's just a vicious circle and when she gets desperate and goes to KFC and they turn around and say we have jobs but not for whites then you know its time to atleast try somewhere where hopefully they wont deny her a job for skin colour.

Anyway, that is a whole different discussion but im certainly not going there just to get into IT. Will be nice to get into IT again but not expecting it. Im expecting a crap job for a good while until I find what I want but totally worth it to go have a new life experience.

There is a fantastic episode on this on the freakonomics website if you're interested. Very recent. Can't link to it at the moment as I'm on my phone but should be fairly easy to find...

Surely what that guy did is illegal and could be held liable for the costs involved in training him. Any good lawyer will be able to see this through.
