Responding to messages

Are we talking stalkerish haven't-responded-in-30-seconds... or like 5 days?

whats the message? does it require a response

Also depends on whether you asked them a question. My last ex wanted me to respond to everything, including statements and rhetorical questions. I don't answer and 3-5 mins later I get a "?"

Depends on the type of message. Sometimes people forget. Or they don't feel like chatting. Or any number of other valid reasons.

IMO, apps like WhatsApp and BBM showing when someone has received/read your message should FOAD. It places unnecessary pressure to respond immediately because the person on the other end can see you read the message and is wondering why you haven't responded yet.

As them why they are ignoring you? Also what you have done wrong and how you can make it right if their silence is your fault. You should do this every 5 mins or so just to make sure they get the message because the networks can mess with messages.

OR

Just remove them from your Christmas shopping list

OR

Ignore them back to teach them a lesson

yes, I usually follow up after a few hours with a "?". Usually works but some people find it rude and intrusive.

i used to be quite bad at responding but now I always respond.

if it required a response ASAP why didnt you phone?

Freaking true. I just use the notification drop down to see the first sentence and decided when to respond. But as soon I accidentally tap on the message I know I'm in it for the long haul.

Well, it is actually quite simple. Social chit chat is fine until the other party gets busy with anything else more important (which could be just about anything - even work). To expect an answer immediately is sometimes a bit egotistical and one should realize the world does not revolve around yourself. Also to expect an answer within a period of time, might make one seem a bit insecure or desperate for attention. Not to offend OP, but have a coke and a smile - the other person is not required to respond on chit chat. And as said before, if it is important rather phone.
