COVID-19
Following the Presidential address on 23 April 2020, and announcements by the government and Department of Trade and Industry on Saturday 25 April 2020, it has been indicated that the delivery of food from restaurants will be permitted from Friday, 1 May 2020, in areas declared at Level 4 status or below.
Mr D Food will at all times be monitoring and following the government regulations and guidelines to determine the parameters in which we can operate and deliver restaurant food.
Mr D Food is currently operating during the lockdown - delivering medicine and essential goods - and will reactivate restaurants on our app at the first available opportunity that government regulations permit.
We are communicating with our restaurant partners at this time to determine which restaurants will reopen and be available for delivery on the Mr D Food app when regulations allow.
Contactless delivery
In support of social distancing, all Mr D Food deliveries are now contactless. Our drivers have been instructed not to make physical contact with any customers and to maintain a safe distance. Bags will be placed on a surface indicated by you, the driver will then back away and allow you to pick out your order yourself.
We have also temporarily deactivated cash payments and encourage customers to use one of our other safe and secure electronic payment methods available in app - credit / debit card, instant EFT or eBucks.
Enhanced Hygiene Practices
We have been educating our drivers in line with WHO guidelines and have implemented enhanced hygiene policies. We have increased the frequency of cleaning of food hot bags and all drivers will be given access to hand sanitiser with clear instructions to sanitise their hands before and after every delivery or collection.

Cape Town - Joe's Easy Diner (Voortrekker Rd, Parow) sent an email direct that they are delivering from Friday. They deliver through MrD/UberE. I find the burgers totally superb and the rest of the menu meh.
NANDO’S FIRES UP THE GRILLS FOR THE HUNGRY
Following the move to level 4 lockdown, Nando’s will open a small number of restaurants dedicated to cooking meals for communities where access to food is a major challenge. Nando’s will be working with Joint Aid Management (JAM) to feed hungry South Africans, partnering with other major restaurant brands including McDonald’s and KFC.
Nando’s will not however be opening their restaurants to the public. Being restricted by government to delivery only, in hours limited by a curfew, mean they will have to remain closed.
“We are delighted, after five long weeks, to be able to support the neediest in our country but opening for delivery only will lose Nando’s and our franchise partners more money than being closed. We are focused on preserving the jobs of our thousands of employees into the future and can’t add to the already enormous weekly losses we’re suffering.” says Mike Cathie, CEO of Nando’s South Africa.
“We’d also like to see the regulations relaxed to allow us to open Drive-Thru restaurants for take-away. Aligning with government’s approach, we believe the risks of Drive-Thru are actually lower than those for delivery.” added Cathie.
Since the announcement of the lockdown, Nando’s has ensured that normal salaries are paid to all their employees, apart from senior management who volunteered reductions to support the business. All suppliers have been paid in full as payments became due. An extended period of royalty breaks has also been agreed with Nando’s franchise partners to help them through the crisis.

Burger King today announced, in line with Government’s Level 4 lockdown guidelines, that it will be opening select restaurants around the country to deliver its full menu locally as of Wednesday, 6 May 2020. This service will be launched in partnership with Mr D Food and Uber Eats.
Ezelna Jones, Group Marketing Executive at Burger King, says that the health and safety of restaurant staff and customers is the top priority during this initial phase of reopening which will see 33 Burger King restaurants* offering delivery services between the hours of 9am and 7pm.
“In line with global hygiene best practice, we will be ensuring that all managers on duty conduct regular wellness checks, including temperature taking for each team member before every shift. To ensure good personal hygiene habits, all Burger King team members are now required to wash hands every 30 minutes at a minimum, as per coronavirus (COVID-19) spread prevention guidelines.”
Additional safeguards, such as all Burger King restaurant managers using a unique COVID-19 Prevention Checklist and implementing associated contactless processes to ensure all team members continue to adhere to the new procedures, have also been introduced, explains Jones.
“Unfortunately, due to the poor financial viability of only offering a home delivery service, coupled with the 8pm (Level 4) curfew, only a few Burger King restaurants will be open for deliveries at this time,” notes Jones, who says that the list of select restaurants available to offer home deliveries can be viewed on the company’s website and social media platforms.
“At this time, we would also like to praise our Government for the inspiring leadership it has demonstrated to date in the face of this global pandemic. As a responsible fast food outlet (FFO), we too are fully committed to minimising the spread of COVID-19 in our country.
“We firmly believe that, from a safe food service and supply perspective, FFO’s are best placed to observe social distancing guidelines, while still playing a key role in ‘kick-starting’ economic activity. Over a gradual phased approach, in partnership with Government, we hope to soon announce options such as Drive-Thru and take-away at all Burger King restaurants, delivering contactless fast food options to our customers - especially frontline workers such as medical emergency, security and law enforcement.”
Jones continues, “We were overwhelmed and humbled by the thousands of South Africans that queued at our restaurants and Drive-Thrus on the days preceding the official lockdown, as well as our countless social media fans that have kept our brand alive during this challenging and unprecedented time in our country’s (and world’s) history.
“We believe this is the first step towards our ‘new normal’ at Burger King, as we get back to business, but echo our Government’s message that health and safety remains the priority for us all as we continue to battle COVID-19 together,” concludes Jones.

KFC ready to serve up South Africa’s most loved fried chicken
Following an announcement made by the government that restaurants can operate via delivery only, KFC will be back in action on the 2nd of May serving up South Africa’s most loved fried chicken. Delivery traditionally has been a small part of our business and as a start, we will open a limited number of restaurants. We are committed to continue working with landlords, suppliers and aggregators to increase our delivery footprint and open even more restaurants in the coming weeks. As we prepare our restaurants, we will have a phased roll-out starting from 2 May 2020.
For now, we are going to make things easier for our customers, with a simplified menu. Your favourite might not be available immediately but will be back in time.
As a brand, the wellbeing of our teams, partners and customers has always been, and remains, our highest priority. In addition to our regular stringent hygiene standards and protocols, we will also implement additional safety measures to ensure a safe working environment for everyone – aligned to government regulations and guidelines.
These additional measures include:
-Face masks to be worn by all team members
-Social distancing measures and regulations for all team members, aggregators and supply chain partners in our restaurants
-Deep cleaning of all restaurants every night and multiple times during the day
-Providing sanitizer spray and chux cloths for delivery riders to wipe down food bags on arrival at our restaurants
-Team members to sanitise hands before and after each transaction with our aggregators
-Temperature checks for all team members twice a day
Our supply chain and aggregator partners (Uber Eats & Mr Delivery) have made the same commitment; assuring us that they have their own, stringent measures in place to protect our team members and customers.
We will continue to work with Government to allow us to open our Drive-Thru’s to enable more South Africans to access the nation’s most loved chicken, whilst respecting contactless service and social distancing.
We are ready and excited to help restart the economy and feed South Africans the great tasting KFC that they have come to love for the past 49 years. Food security during this time is a reality for many South Africans. We will therefore continue to do our part and help make a difference in the communities in which we operate through our Add Hope initiative that has to date, provided over 1 million meals to those most affected by this pandemic.
