Please can any one advise me as to what a reasonable retainer fee to charge a client with 2 offices be ....the client is running a Linux server and a few work stations :cool:

Your hourly rate x amount of hours you spend on average per month at client could be an option to consider.

for example you could charge R 400 x 4 hours per month = R 1,600

How many workstations and what services is the Linux server running? Do you need to do WAN Management as well?

Number of users / 350 * 8 * 22 * hourly rate = estimated time/cost to service a site (for helpdesk support)

So if there's 3 work stations, and my hourly rate is R250, I charge them a retainer of R377?

Here's usually what I do when asked to quote retainer:

(Average Time (in hours) worked in a month @ client * 80%) * hourly rate

I apologise, I was in a rush so I did not have time to fully explain.

User support is usually calculated at one full time support member per 300-350 users; of course it differs from company to company. It also differs when including other work like network and server support.

So the formula I specified is sometimes used to indicate a "standard" amount of work hours for a particular sized company; plus more for supporting other components such as a network and servers.

R500 a month to provide technical support (but not necessarily end user support) to 3 workstations would seem fair. It should not take longer than two hours a month to make sure patches, AV etc is working OK....

Ah I see where you're coming from. I'm referencing including end-user support as well.
