so both mtn & vodacom have retentions departments.

one of my data contracts has been with mtn, renewed every 2nd yr (4th cycle was about to begin).
vodacom came up with a few data offerings, significantly better than mtn had on the table.

so example, all "sim-only" data contract with mtn now include streaming data - needless to say, this is restricted to their partners like showmax - not any platform with streaming content.
one now has to also subscribe to a 3rd party service like showmax, to make use of this data allocation.
in my case, i have dstv, apple tv, netflix & amzon prime, however i honestly cannot recall when last i even switched on the tv., so for me, yet another subscription would be lunacy.

in the circumstances, i took out a vodacom "sim-only" data contract.
however unlike my previous sim-only data contract with vodacom, i discovered they changed things significantly.
unlike previously where one could share the vodacom data by simply buying another sim card for the 2nd device and paying a monthly fee of around R25pm, one now has to enter into a 2nd separate contract for the receiving sim.

upon cancelling with mtn, the calls and mails started coming in from mtn retentions.
i responded by attaching a link to the vodacom product offering, along with confirmation of approval from vodacom - letting mtn know they need to produce something similar without the bundled "streaming data" included nonsense.
i get an email back telling me they will provide something better and to expect a call.

with that i refused to accept delivery of the vodacom sim, and advised of cancellation.
needless to say, that then triggered vodacom's retention ppl.
mtn call and offer a sim-only data contract, stripped of the streaming data etc, and can be shared without limit or additional cost - a rather good deal.

this all begs the question - why the run-around.
i'm assuming here the networks take a look at your customer profile, credit rating etc, and decide if you are "worthy" of the effort in retention - and if so, make effort to retain you.
in this instance i'm offered a data deal not advertised anywhere, kept from public view.
it would seem a lot easier for all, and probably more cost effective, to have these hidden deals visible to "worthy" customers when clicking the upgrade button in the app

anyone here with network insider info that can explain the logic behind network thinking here.
for a little further context, out of the 2 previous 2yr contract cycles, mtn got around R40k from me.
going forward with them would result in similar / higher revenue from me - which they came perilously close to losing.
i'm obviously only one customer they could have lost income from - no big deal - but 100 customers in the same boat & suddenly the landscape changes a bit

30 min phone call with vodacom and all I got told was the black friday deals that they have at present. I Cancelled with vodacom. Waiting to see what mtn is going to offer me
