Retrenchment process begins at SAA

It won't make much difference.

Assuming the "average" salary of the retrenched workers in R500 000 (most are ground staff and crew), then this will only save SAA around R1 Billion a year.

They lost R5.6 Billion last year alone. This year it will be more like R7 Billion.

In addition to the retrenchments, they're busy streamlining their operations (hope politicians don't mettle...) so, I presume other savings will come from fuel savings, elimination of non-profitable routes, reinstatement of profitable routes, procurement, etc.
 
The last strike, which ironically led to this BR process, was caused by an attempt to retrench. I don't this ending any different. It will probably end with the airline collapsing but propped up by the public purse.

Retrenchments are just one of several measures that they are taking - obviously. No one is claiming this will be the silver bullet that fixes SAA.

SAA moves to cut almost half its workforce

Employees of South African Airways (SAA) are being asked to submit themselves to an expedited consultation process on possible retrenchments that could see close to 2 270 workers laid off to avoid the liquidation of the airline.

Business rescue practitioners (BRPs) Les Matuson and Siviwe Dongwana said in a statement on Monday that notices have been issued to the eight recognised employee unions as well as management to begin consultations that will affect all 4 708 employees based in South Africa.

The Labour Relations Act states that consultations should be held for 60 days. The first consultation meeting will be held on March 12 and, applying the provisions of the act, the process should end on May 8.

the government officials in parliament rely on SAA for the free trips around the country and world on it.
Can you imagine that these poor people now have to pay for a 1st class seat on a British Airways plane? :oops:

they will just downscale the SAA so that they can still enjoy their perks

That may or may not be true. But I would rather believe the practitioners that some random on the internet.
 
The point is they need to find at least another R5 - R6 bn in savings this year to break even.

What else can they possibly cut back on?

To add to that, their cash flow has been devastated by lack of faith in the airline and the coronavirus.

Sounds like the unions have decided to step aside.

Look I feel sorry for most(most in the sense they applied for a position and got it honorably) that will lose their jobs the others that got there because of favors I feel nothing, but it is not nice to lose your job because of some idiot fatcat that was too incompetent to do their job
