What an earie feeling.

They just started calling the people for their concultations and then they get given their letters. 2 people in my area has just been called :(

I submitted a vulantary request but seems to have been declined. But the feeling when the people start getting their requests to attend the one on one meeting is sooo draining to the area as a whole ...

That sucks.

Good luck Pitbull, this can't be easy for anyone....

you submitted a voluntary request though? why?

Having other plans :p

But mine seems to have been declined and 2 people in our area was selected or so it seems. Will wait and see what happens. But the whole floor has gone from chirpy and happy to depressed and quiet

Sounds rough. I remember just a few months ago how you were on here raving about how great MTN's financial results were and then they turn around and start laying off.

Good luck dude, it's awful trying to work in a poisonous environment like this.

Not all about the moola then hey? Chopping out the dead wood or something

More like getting rid of those whose entire deartment were shutdown and who didnt make it to any of the "open" slots available.....

In all fairness they did try very hard not to loose any staff....

Quite revealing that they "volunteer" people and do not accept voluntaries...
The ones that volunteer are the competent ones that don't fear being dropped back into the job market. Those are the ones the companies are keen to hang on to.

@Pitbull: Try to see it as a vote of confidence in you on management's part. Cloud & silver lining:o

Did they bring in outside consultants?

Weren't you coming to cape town?

That was part of my plan :)

I have no idea how to look at this. Will see how it pans out. Maybe I still get my Voluntary approved :p But will have to wait and see. Seems like they notified all the people involved.

I was with Eskom when they started this in the 80's, and it really created a bad atmosphere as you say.
There was a number of suicides, but also as you did, some requested to be released (the good ones) and Eskom declined. The guys took it to the unions and Eskom was forced to allow the the good guys to swap out with the riff-raff that Eskom gave retrenchment notices to.

I was in a similar situation when my first time around, but kudos to the hatchet man, once they had finalised who had to go they made sure we didnt go through a long drawn out process. The one nice thing was that we didnt have to take stock over Christmas!
My second time around I was so tired of the company and the harridan of a boss I was just too glad to go.

In my job conunfrum thread I mentioned that things at my employer are starting to irk me somewhat. One of the things that gets to me is the retrenchment process. While it does not affect me in any way personally I object what staff in other divisions are being put through and in all honesty it make me wonder when its my divisions turn.

About 6 months ago the divisions in question went through a "restructuring", at this stage the company was split up into new chunks and everyone in the old divisions had to reapply for positions where they believed they were suitable for. Everyone had to go for interviews and those who couldn't get the positions they applied for were simply placed in others. After this process there was a nice big get together, everyone patting each other on the back and congratulations all round that the process is now complete and nobody lost their jobs.

Friday afternoon about 2 weeks ago at 16:30 an email was sent out to one these new chunks simply stating that the company has to retrench, anyone who doesn't get a second email doesn't have to worry, everyone else needs to go through the consultation process. Positions available are listed and anyone who thinks they are suitable can apply, those who want can take voluntary retrenchment. Big issue is there are only positions available for 80% of the people.

Monday of this week, same email goes out to another one of the new chunks with an additional note that they hope to have everything completed by next week. Once again only positions available for 80% of the people.

Now what really really gets me down is that I am friends with a lot of these people and I can see what this is doing to them. I question the decision of restructuring 6 months ago and saying that its all done and dusted only to come back now, at Christmas, and telling people they have to apply for jobs AGAIN for the 2nd time this year.

Arzy.. that is some crazy stuff.

My first company I ever worked for... I remember like it was yesterday (11 years ago). Was very small IT shop (5 devs, 2 were directors). The company got bought by another one.

New bosses got 2 new devs in. These 2 guys downloaded from Napster gigs of mp3s. I got a warning letter that my mail box was over size limit (W.T.F, and I kid you not). The 2 original devs also got warning letters about crap issues. But the 2 new guys didn't receive any warning etc even though they were downloading mp3s etc.

That was the new management way of telling us ( the 3 original devs) to f-ck off. No retrencement etc (because they had to pay you money). They just made it k@k to work there. All 3 of us left in the same month. The 2 directors rolled in the money... we got kicked in the teeth. (After 2.5 years of work for them).
