Hi guys, one or two questions about Ret. Up until last night in Cata I've levelled and run dungeons as a tank. Thats been great and my tanking gear hit average ilvl 352 a few days ago. As an added bonus I picked up a ilvl 350 ret gear set while tanking, so last night I thought i'd join the ranks of the "30 minuters" :-/
So anyway, ive been able to crack about 10k dps in certain scenarios but in others I have dropped as low as 5k. Mostly in fights that entail a lot of running / chasing. I find that I battle to keep slice and, uh, inquisistion up and besides for a few decent crits the damage feels so sloooow and cumbersome.
Has anyone got any tips as to how to keep ret dps maximised and effective no matter the fight circumstances. Actually any ret tips in general would be appreciated. I think I have my stats about right in terms of hit, expertise, strgth, haste, crit and mastery but i'm certainly no expert. Oh, and when does it become effective to use divine storm over crusader strike, how many mobs minimum. Divine storm feels so weak now.
Thanks.

Ret's dps is slow and cumbersome and it's not even close to constant like you said doing 10k then down to 5k.
Some of the things i've read that seem toe help, try using Seal of righteousness instead of the stacking one(cant remember new names). Only use divine storm with 3 or more mobs, this replaces the use of crusader strike and isn't worth using otherwise.

I wouldnt worry too much about mastery atm as it gives us the HoL proc, this is has the annoying habbit of proccing just as a fight ends. Afaik they will be changing ret's mastery to give a % extra holy damage instead of the HoL proc which is gonna be a great boost when used in conjunction with Inquisition.

As for the running around fights, your melee it happens:)

If they change Ret's mastery use it will be fantastic, I too tend to not rely on the proc as it never seems to happen when you need it. I mean prot's mastery gives a constant added bonus to blocking so the benefit is tangible. Ret's use of mastery feels like an afterthought. Hopefully they will change it for the better. Thanks for the tips Spawn-X ;-)

No worries, will see if I can confirm the mastery change as soon as I get home this afternoon. can't access mmo-champion from work:(

Retribution
Act of Sacrifice will no longer cause Cleanse to remove movement impairing effects from vehicles the paladin is riding.
Divine Purpose: The chance for applicable abilities to generate Holy Power has been reduced to 7/15%, down from 20/40%, but instead of generating 1 Holy Power, the next applicable ability used consumes no Holy Power and acts as if the paladin has 3 Holy Power.
Hand of Light (Mastery): A percentage of the damage done by Templar's Verdict, Crusader Strike, and Divine Storm is done as additional Holy damage.
Repentance is no longer broken from damage done by Censure (Seal of Truth).
The Rebuke talent has been replaced with a new passive talent, Sacred Shield. Paladins who had Rebuke before will automatically have Sacred Shield. Sacred When reduced below 30% health, paladins gain the Sacred Shield effect. The Sacred Shield absorbs X damage and increases healing received by 20%. Lasts 15 seconds. This effect cannot occur more than once every 30 seconds. Undispellable.
Seals of Command will no longer trigger twice on each swing with Seal of Truth.
Zealotry is no longer dispellable.

Some of the Changes to ret coming in patch 4.0.6

Anyway, atm if you play ret. You're not a Paladin, you're a Procadin.

Procadin indeed! :-(
So the change in mastery I am quite excited about, I hope it turns out to be a beneficial change. But the rest i'm a little sketchy on, whether or not it's a nerf remains to be seen. The removal of rebuke to be replaced by a totally different spell / mechanic... Is that due to pvp again or what?

Ret isn't a spec, it's a joke. Ret paladins in pvp are free HKs, and in pve your damage isn't anywhere near consistent enough to justify tagging along. Theoretically on boss fights ret dps can keep up with the other dps specs - provided that you get procs - but on trash, it's terrible. And since cata started, trash can be more dangerous than bosses - but then, you're a tank, I don't have to tell you that.

The HoL mastery is currently a liability, so it's good that they're replacing it. PTR changes look like they'll help, but still - ret as a spec hasn't been competitive or fun to play since 4.01 dropped. My advice is to stick with prot, bank the DPS gear for now, and dual spec holy. Maybe try Holy PvP - hpalas are presently all but indestructible, which is still an improvement from 4.01 where they were completely untouchable.

Aye it looks like I'll give holy a whirl as well, but for now I'll give ret a chance. If it's exactly as you say, which I suspect it is, then i'll drop it in due course.
For the next few days, running ret for dailies and the occasional dungeon will be a nice change of pace. Lets hope the upcoming changes turn things around for our loladins..

Great so theyre fixing one aspect of ret and removing rebuke? That's some serious bs right there, rebuke meant we were useful on some hc bosses:( Next they'll be taking our weopons and giving us wands or some ****e.

Yeah, it's really crap, why on earth remove something like that anyway? I haven't searched around but would love to know the reasoning. Rofl I can just see loladins tanking dual wield soon, with a wand and a scroll...

Last night I joined grim batol heroic as ret, after waiting 30 min :-( and then the dk tank was crap. The healer had to spend 99% time keeping him up and we were struggling.. Finally after the 3rd wipe on the 2nd last boss I took over tanking and we went on to finish the instance in the next 15 min. Looks like I'm going to revert back to tanking. It's much harder work but at least I don't have to scratch my nuts in Org half the night and I can actually complete dungeons without multiple wipes.

If ever there was a time to re-roll this would be it. Not gonna sit around and watch Blizz f up my main every chance they get. I dont mind the tanking but its very monotonous:(

I love my pally and doubt i'll reroll anytime soon. I have a lock if I need a total change of pace. I actually enjoy tanking most of all, I prefer to be the master of my own fate when it comes to heroics, although it does get tiring, especially when one has to nurse pug after pug through every fight. I think I need a guild where others are running heroics :-/

Then you'll end up nursing guildies. Soon as I log on I get spammed by dps wanting to do heroics and don't wanna wait for the q:S

I'd actually still prefer to nurse guildies, at least that would mean guild progression. Most pug dps have wrath syndrome and are either useless or just asses. I've noticed lately too that a lot of the more casual players have finally gotten their toons past the HC gear barrier, so now one ends up in pugs with guys with horrible gear and barely a clue.. Always fun..:-(

Great so theyre fixing one aspect of ret and removing rebuke?

No, they're giving Rebuke to all 3 specs as a trained skill instead of a talent. In exchange, ret gets a pretty awesome passive survival talent that I'd quite like on my tankadin.

Oooh thought rebuke was gone completely. Well in that case it might not be so bad, as for the survival talent i think it's needed. Remember a guildie complaining that his clothy wasn't taking as much damage while leveling.

Phew thats a relief regarding rebuke. And I agree that ret feels really shquishy.. Doing Tol Barad dailies pulling more than 2 mobs at a time could get messy whereas with prot pulling several is no issue and end up doing the quests quicker :-S
Heals seem to have no effect, I can dump my whole mana pool on healing up 25% HP, which doesnt help towards surviveability.
