I also lost my number...after being out of country...Vodacom will not help they do not even notify you of deleting the number they just implement. Shameless they don't even worry about the well being of their clients.
In this case, the fault is on you. When you are out of the country, you keep your number active by recharging with airtime once every 2 months (that is the rule for Cell C and it should be similar for all the networks).
If you really want the number back, your best bet is to try and get hold of the new owner once the number is redistributed and plead with them/ offer them some cash if you want for them to do an exchange.
