Reverse DNS (PTR) record on home fiber?

Do any of the ISP's offer reverse DNS on home fiber packages?

We use Vumatel + Cell C and the Cell C support staff did not know what I was asking for. Not really looking forward to switching as Vuma makes that a PAIN with the whole releasing of lines, but it is what it is.

Also do any of the ISP's offer an automated way of managing PTR records. It would be nice to be able to do it myself without having to write an email or talk to someone.

So that I can play around with self hosting a mail server.

Would I ever use it as a production mail server ... probably not, Absolute Hosting is where my email lives right now and it's dirt cheap and mostly managed for me.

I would like to play around with email a bit just so that i can learn more about it.

If none of the ISP's offer it I will end up playing around with a VPS. But doing it on my own bare metal sounds more exciting.

Just get a VPS..

The first issue you will run into is RBLs that block dynamic IP addresses automatically based on their PTR records, which most ISP have configured them in a way that marks them as dynamic..
 
Yes Afrihost has this built right in.

my_user.ip.afrihost.co.za

But also a hundred other ways to do this like DuckDNS etc.

Only know bout Afrihost so best you ask them.

Personally I don’t use it, rather have DuckDNS and Letsencrypt do all the work for me.

and when I do have a paid for domain I always use Cloudflare tunnels instead.

We do generic reverse for all customers as well. But no ISP actually wants customers hosting mailservers as they can become a risk.

Hosting a mail server from a residential ip is a waste of time. You won't have any luck getting mails through to any of the major email providers. Your emails will just simply be rejected without even an opportunity to hit the spam folder.
 
It's possible to host mail server on any IP - if you set it up well. Services like https://www.mail-tester.com can help with advice / checking.

Yes, some companies like Microsoft / hotmail etc can be a pain. But you can also create custom delivery logic to deliver via services like Sendgrid / Mailgun for the known problem cases.

There's definitely always a work around, the linux env has an infinite pool of resources.

I feel that ultimately your two biggest considerations are:

1. Cost/financial feasibility: Is the cost of hardware purchases, maintenance, redundancies for fibre outages & power outages , and all necessary add-ons and subscriptions worthwhile over going with a VPS/Cloud service?

2. Convenience: There's a pretty great reason IaaS has been booming, most people just do not want to bother with the admin of keeping a server going vs just using it, again VPS/Cloud comes out on top for most requirements.

Ultimately, each situation needs a unique solution and that's why business pursuits need a good feasibility assessment.
