Holy mackerel!

I just got a quote from Audi Centre Somerset West for a Motorite extension to the maintenance plan for our Audi A3 and the figures are, to put it mildly, fraking big!

Option 1: Full Maintenance Plan
BAND OF COVER PLAN FEE INITIAL EXTENT OF COVER
24 MONTHS / 40 000KM R43 700.00 (ex VAT) 100 000KM TO 140 000KM
36 MONTHS / 60 000KM R65 550.00 (ex VAT) 100 000KM TO 160 000KM

Option 2: Service Plan
BAND OF COVER PLAN FEE INITIAL EXTENT OF COVER
24 MONTHS / 40 000KM R8250.00 (ex VAT) 100 000KM TO 140 000KM
36 MONTHS / 60 000KM R13 750.00 (ex VAT) 100 000KM TO 160 000KM

Option 3: Warranty
Options Explorer 2 years R7011
Options Explorer 2 years double up R11115

Somehow I don't see how 2 services in the next 2 years will cost R8k, so that option seems pretty useless to me. So I'm thinking of just taking up the extended warranty and pay for the services. The double up warranty is R11 115.00 - is that a better option in your opinion?

Would appreciate some advice on this, thanks!

Maybe get a quote from SA Warranties. Motorite are pretty mediocre in terms of both pricing and service.

looks like a cambelt service would be due in that mileage
ask audi how much thats gonna cost you? and then see if its covered in the servce plan....

Not covered, and the cambelt change is around R8K
Not covered by the Motorite maintenance plan?? AFAIK their premium coverage plan includes everything barring petrol and tyres, as extensive as the Freeway maintenance plan sold with Audi's.

EDIT: I'm pretty sure the full plan would cover the cambelt. Maybe phone Motorites claims authorizations department to get clarity...

i was refering to the service plan, but im not sure what the OP checked

im sure its covered under the M/plan but why not the service plan
afaik the cambelt is a specified item in the 90/120k km service, so it should be covered by the service plan?

No, the full plan covers everything. It's the standalone service plan which doesn't cover the cambelt change.

If the car is worth R190K, IMHO it's not worth it to spend R45K to keep it until next year when the new model comes out. At that point we will probably only get R160K on the trade-in anyway.

I'm thinking just get the warranty @ R12K, and we will probably only have to pay for the 105K service before trading it in since we don't even do 15Kkm in one year.

service plan schedule specifically says it's not covered unless you pay an extra R5K when buying the policy

how long will you be keeping the car for?

Until the new model comes out, sometime in first quarter of 2012 maybe?

Eish, even on the full maintenance plan the cambelt is not covered:

Items Not Covered By this Policy
We are not liable for:
Services, maintenance items, seals, oil leaks, cambelt, ring gear, fly wheel, flex plate, drive shaft boots and drive shaft failure because of worn or damaged boots or covers, handbrake mechanism, brake friction surfaces, radiator recore and burnt valves;

Option 2? Okay, understandable.. I wouldn't touch anything other than the full service plan so yeah, it's quite a big whack at R45k!!

It all hinges on what you plan on doing with the vehicle over the next couple of years, agreed. I assume the 5year/100 000km Freeway plan is reaching maturity hence the need for an after market service plan? If you keeping it for another 20 000km's maybe stick R12k away in an interest bearing account and hope and pray that there are no catastrophic mechanical failures between now and when you intend trading the vehicle in.

Personally I'm not convinced about Option B. Also enquire if there is an option to subscribe and pay monthly.

6 months is a short time
dont worry about warranty/service plans if you getting rid of the car next year
since you trading in, i dont think it will make a big difference, would be different if you selling private since it would prob be easier to sell with a plan

take the 12k as sandmann says and stick it in an interest bearing account -
if you still have it when you trade in, add it to the deposit or use it for a plan extension, they usually cheaper when the car is new/newer

thanks chaps. Although we cannot be sure the new A3 will be coming next year - it has already been delayed due to the development of the Q3 & A1. Maybe I should convince SWAMBO to trade the A3 for a Q3 now :)

Spoke to Audi Centre Somerset West about the options for new models. The Q3 is coming in March 2012, new A3 only in Dec 2012. If I can convince SWAMBO to get a Q3 then no need to get a warranty, but if she wants to get an A3 I don't think it's a good idea to not have a safety net for a whole year.

I also got a quote from McCarthy for a 2 year, unlimited km warranty:

POLICY TYPE COVER ONCE OFF PREMIUM or MONTHLY PREMIUM
Maxi Single Cover R 30,000 R 4,995 R305pm
Maxi Double Cover R 60,000 R 7,495 R460pm

Additional Benefits of the Maxi Warranty:
Wear and Tear on the Covered Components - 50% towards the claim
Overheating - 50% towards the claim
Timing Belt - 50% towards the claim
