Rhodes Park double murder and rape case

This horror story had been haunting me all day. I've spent many an hour walking in Rhodes Park, with wife and kids. We have such pleasant memories, from late 80s/early 90s. Now that place is haunted.

The harshest human justice exacted on these evil perpetrators cannot balance the scales. I hope it is swift and harsh. I am also glad that the final rage and punishment lies with a higher tribunal, which they cannot possibly escape, no matter how thorough the human punishments.

The parks hopes of benefiting from the newly renovated pool has been destroyed.

This is a very upsetting story as I have family attending the girls school across the road.

Woman escaped as friend was raped and their husbands drowned

Ahmed Areff, News24

Johannesburg - Gauteng police have launched a manhunt for a gang that drowned two men in a dam at Rhodes Park, Johannesburg in front of their wives.

One of the gang of 12 also raped one of the men's wives, while the other wife ran away around 19:00 on Saturday, Lieutenant Colonel Lugelo Dlamini said.

"Apparently two men and their wives (28 and 29) were walking at the park when they were confronted by a group of about 12 suspects," he said.

"It is alleged that one of the suspects was armed with a handgun. The suspects tied up both men and threw them into a dam at the park. One of their wives was raped and the other managed to escape."

Police divers found the men's bodies later.

DA Gauteng MPL Jack Bloom said a source told him the gang had tied up the husbands in their own clothes, and also confirmed that only one of the suspects raped a women, while the others men held her down.

He said the couples were apparently from the Free State.

Park gates weren’t locked

The 12 apparently escaped from the park through a storm drain.

"The park is locked at night and police struggled to get in when they were called."

But Johannesburg City Parks spokesperson Jenny Moodley told News24 the park closes at 18:00.

However the gates were not locked.

She said it was possible the couples had come earlier in the day and were on the way out of the park.

People also often used the park as a thoroughfare.

"We are awaiting a police report on the incident. The safety concerns of patrons to Rhodes Park are of utmost importance to us," she said.

She said plans were being looked at to deploy guards in the city's parks permanently.

Bloom said there had previously been other crime incidents in the park.

Moodley confirmed there had been incidents of crime in the park in the past.

Will be interesting to see where the investigation into this crime and possible trial goes The news story so far make it seem pretty gruesome.

If you have any info then you should let the police know.

They're black. Doesn't help the police much, now does it. How do I know? Just call me telepathic*.

*telepathy doesn't exist, but statistics sure as **** do.

I'd really like to understand what your reasoning is here. You're probably going to say I have comprehension issues. If that is the case, please help me understand how saying "this country is sick" can be seen as belittling the cause of the victims.

When you say that you write off the victims. Saying basically that they should just expect to be raped and murdered because that is what being south african is all about.

Think this crime they'll get caught since it is high profile (considering how gruesome it is) as well as it being 12 people. The police will give out a reward for information and someone they know will claim it or one of the 12 will make a deal with the police.

Thanks for explaining. Many South Africans (from all walks of SA life) believe that violent crime (such as rape, armed robberies and murder) in SA is disproportionately high. Would you agree with this?

Of course it is, doesn't mean it's something we deserve

You don't say Sherlock. Where the majority of the population is black, what are the chances

Crime only occurs in SA.

/facepalm

Yeah. I agree, Worse is happening Is the ME like in Syria where ISIS run amok.

Hey, wait ...we are talking South Africa where there are only as much crime as in the first world..NOT!

I couldn't agree more.

Do you think saying "this country is sick" implies the judgement that the victims deserved what happened to them?

Yes, because when you say the country is sick you include the victims.

It's not the country that is sick, it's the system that is failing. The country is amazingly beautiful.

Woman get gang raped all over the world. Often it's not even considered a crime.
There are honour killings in the UK
There are school shootings is the USA
In Austria kids get kidnapped by their own father and raped for 30 years.

It's pathetic to write off a country just because the rape happened here

Majority of Americans are white majority of jails are filled with blacks

1. We aren't in America.
2. Generalizations spread even more distrust across the population. A person/group committed the crime. Not an entire racial group.
3. I actually agree with your previous posts, having a firearm would have given them a fighting chance.
