RICA - contract holders?

R5000 pm in 1994 was borderline? That's like R20K now.

Your passport will be required.
If you are staying in a hotel then most hotels can provide you with a letter on their letterhead stipulating that you are residing with them.
If you are renting, then rental agreement will can be provided as proof of address.

Everyone should have refused to do it and we'd see how quickly VC, MTN and CC would demand the govt repeal the law. If the govt refused then there'd be no more tax payments from these companies - billions of Rands in tax the govt wouldn't get. People would just make use without cell phones for a month or two before the lines would become unlocked and govt would realise how stupid their initiative was.

Valid Passport (of any country) and proof of address in South Africa, (i.e. bank statement, utility bill, rental agreement, vehicle licence document and so on).

If you are a temporary resident then a proof of your non-SA address is acceptable.

I don't see why they need the full rental agreement. The first and last pages, yes, but why the full document?
 
Can you RICA your Vodacom sim with a copy of your Cell-C account statement and then vice versa?

Many other countries have similar procedures to RICA all be it under different titles! This includes places like Australia and many European countries!

Places like India have more draconian procedures including a four page form to be filled in and two passport photos need to be supplied...

In the USA as a non-resident you are not permitted to obtain a SIM card at all...

So do tell what makes you feel as a South African you should be above procedures that are common place in many countries? Is it because you have to do it or simply because you need to actually need to make the effort to walk into a RICA agents premises??

You do know that we have all been through this before? Remember FICA (banks)?
The government did put a fine in place for the networks for each person not RICA'd so, there was no way that the networks wouldn't comply.

Can you verify this? I have my native ID and in that it states my address in my home country. Valid and true.

Any equivalent document as required by SA permanent residents. If nothing available pop into your local police station and they can give you a validation of address...

Yes!

Plus in all cases you will need to be in physical possession of the SIM or SIM's that are being registered. This is because the last four digits of the SIM number are used to validate the phone number being registered. Worth remembering if you have a 3G data card or remote tracking device using a SIM card.

I would not accept this. ID docs are only to be accepted in the issuing country. It is not meant for international purposes. Neither are we interested in knowing where you live in your home country...we want to know where you are living in South Africa. Passport and proof of South African address please.

Dit was 'n grappie! Laugh! :-)

I have said it before and i will say it again. This law was brought in by guavamint. There is nothing the service providers can do about it. All I can suggest is do your RICA now. Dont leave it to the last minute. Sure there is going to be a last minute rush and then you will get very frustrated.
 
Here is a quick trick to get yourself a legitimate proof of address:

Go to your usual Chemists shop and explain that you need a proof of address, get the chemist to put any items that you require on account and that print out a statement. Now go and pay for the items and admire your proof of address! This trick can apply to any other retail outlet that would normally offer accounts, in fact I've even had a doctors account used a proof of address. The proof of address needs to be no older than three months and must shown your name and physical address NOT P.O. Box number.

Hmm, but that's a dilemma for me since I'm sharing with a friend (and hence not officially renting since they pay all the fees, I just give it to them). Friend doesn't get invoices physically sent and I don't receive any mail. Ideas?

P.S. Can I use any FICA registration details for this as well?

Letter from your bank or bank statements should be accepted. Provided that it is one of the South African banks. NB: It must reflect your physcial address, not PO Box
