RICA, or else...

South Africans who do not have their SIM cards registered by the end of the day on Thursday will have their cellphone numbers deactivated.

Wow, I believe this is the third article about RICA, I think we all know about it by now.

Eddie Moyce, a customer service executive at MTN, said that the database in which the Rica information is stored is secure and can only be accessed through a subpoena, thus ensuring customers’ privacy.

Confidence inspiring?

NOT.

No worries, if you don't go to the store, they will automatically do it for you.

Or pay R10 and get RICA'ed without any proof of residence or ID.

I'm very sorry to burst MTN's bubble, but the database where all the info is stored has pathetic security. It can be accessed with some common SQL injection methods. And no I didn't and won't hack it, I'm just saying.

I'll be testing this out soon enough.

SO I finally gave in and RICA :( How long does it take to reflect my registration?

I just did the RICA thing at checkers 5min ago and the MTN site now says I'm RICA'd while yesterday it said I was not so it seems instantaneous.

Who RICA’d me?

Your service providers. On some random person's name (someone who already registered). They don't want to lose clients... F&#^ing pathetic if you ask me. The whole RICA thing is totally useless now.

Now? It is just as useless now as the day it was proposed.

so who got cut off?

Nobody.

As other people have mentioned earlier in this thread, if you don't go into a store to RICA, your SP wil simply change to status to RICA'ed. MTN does at least, I know for a fact that I never ever provided proof of residence, didn't even need to when I applied for the new MTN contract 2 years ago. This did surprise me at the time because most SP were required to take RICA details from new customers back then already.

So while I really couldn't care less, it does kinda show what a monumental joke this whole RICA excersize is/was
