Rich man’s terrorist

If it had not been for a sudden family emergency, Erik Prince, the CEO of Blackwater, now renamed Xe, would have possibly been killed in the terrorist attack on the Islamabad Marriott in September 2008.

According to a rare interview given to Vanity Fair magazine, Prince reveals that an accident involving his son in America forced him to back out of a trip to Islamabad where he would have been checking into the hotel at the very time that the catastrophic blast took place.

News about the newly renamed Blackwater and Prince’s exploits in connection with assassination plots in Karachi and impending drone attacks in Balochistan and South Waziristan have been proliferating in the global news media for the past several weeks. This latest addition, an in-depth interview to a journalist who himself once worked as a CIA attorney, attempts to detail Prince’s own frustration at having been made the CIA’s scapegoat.

The story of Prince’s involvement in a secret CIA programme, was revealed by CIA chief Leon Panetta in a congressional hearing in June last year where Panetta insisted that he himself had learned of its existence only a day ago and had ordered it to be shut down. During the hearing, Panetta revealed two names: that of Blackwater and its CEO Erik Prince. Both, he stated, had been heavily involved in the programme to conduct highly sensitive operations.

According to Jeremy Scahill’s report in The Nation these special Blackwater cells also had bases in Karachi and other parts of Pakistan from which they ran their operations. In the Vanity Fair report, Mamoun Darkazanli, an Al Qaeda financier, is revealed to have been taken out by the supposed secret CIA programme without any knowledge of the German government. According to the interview, a similar attack was planned on A.Q. Khan in Pakistan but was never carried out.

The cavalcade of controversy that has followed recent revelations regarding Blackwater/Xe are notable for the marked turn they represent in the nature of warfare as defined by the age of terror. In essence, they represent the implicit admission that liberal democracies, even those as strong as the United States, are unable to fight transnational terror without giving up the very core principles that define their ideological positions.

The democratic process, with the necessity of congressional oversight and the authority of defined legal parameters, all impose a cost on the speed and alacrity with which warfare can be carried out. Borders interfere, laws constrain and elected assemblies meddle, adding cumbersome burdens to national security objectives as defined by intelligence agencies.

In the case of Blackwater and the United States, this story of changed warfare could not have been told in this way until after President Obama assumed office.

Until the Bush regime ended, the use of Blackwater, the embrace of legal limbo in the fight against terror and the refusal to let go of tactics that evade oversight could ostensibly be discarded as the tools of a neo-conservative cabal that was out to get blood based on its own imperialist goals. But the advent of the Obama administration and its ongoing refusal to relinquish links with such tactics has proved however that the shift cannot simply be ascribed to a particular administration. Indeed, President Obama himself has authorised at least three of these targeted killings since assuming the presidency.

Drone attacks have increased markedly during his nine months in office and he has refused to authorise a moratorium on extraordinary rendition. Finally, the recently authorised expansion of drone attacks into Balochistan, a continuation of the illegal regime targeted killings programme reiterates this point.

The emergence of this new dynamic reveals how the tools at hand are defining both fronts of the war on terror.

Meanwhile, the global north with an excess of resources and a dearth of ideology has produced private contractors as its answer to non-state fighters. Mercenaries such as those trained by Blackwater/Xe, DynCorp’s and Triple Canopy all mobilise with money instead of ideology. Like transnational terrorists produced by Al Qaeda, these mercenaries are bound by nothing other than the mission defined and the sum paid.

By not being tied formally to a military fighting force, they are unconstrained by the laws of war and by operating as a corporation they do not have to undergo the hassle of being accountable to or funded by elected bodies.

Furthermore, when governments subcontract their dirtiest tasks to them, they retain the option of denying ties or assuming responsibility — a win-win situation for carrying out politically unpopular actions without incurring the costs.

Blackwater terrorists carry out heinous crimes and it is believed they implement supposed 'suicide bombings' to create a rift amongst people and also manipulate public opinion.

There is a knock down drag out fight going on over this right now in the US media. I doubt that Blackwater USA\XE\whatevertheheck will be implicated in anything real. They have very real enemies in the civil service (CIA and DoJ), however, which is mostly left wing.

Can we get this entire thing sourced, especially this comment?

I have forgotten the source, but for whatever its worth, I know what was being referenced:

More likely then you think. Reminiscent of Zionist tactics.

Well, atleast it means World public opinion matters to the US government.

Wonder how many other blasts were done to implicate and cast the 'militants' in a bad light.

I hate to break it to your but every government has such black ops teams and private/semi-private corporations. Want to compare the CIA/BW to the FSB/KGB?

Those govts which don't have these resources, are jealous they had them too.

US Central Intelligence Agency Director Leon Panetta

Despite repeated denials, the CIA has now confirmed that US security contractor Xe Services, formerly known as Blackwater, has been operating in Pakistan.

CIA spokesman George Little said that agency Director Leon Panetta has terminated a contract with Xe services that allowed the company’s employees to load bombs on CIA drones at secret airfields in Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Although the spokesman denied that Blackwater was currently involved in CIA operations in Pakistan and Afghanistan, his comments, contradicted past US assertions that the company does not operate in Pakistan.

Other than the US administration, the Pakistani government and Xe itself had denied that the company was operating in Pakistan.
Little did say, however, that the contractor still provides so-called security or support assistance to the US intelligence agency in the two countries. He did not elaborate further on exactly what that role involves.

While the New York Times published CIA’s claim that Blackwater employees no longer have an operational role in the agency’s covert programs in Pakistan and Afghanistan, the Guardian posted a quite different article.

Citing comments from an unnamed former US official, the British daily reported that Blackwater was still operating in Pakistan at a secret CIA airfield used for launching drone attacks.

According to the official, who has direct knowledge of the operation, Xe employees patrol areas surrounding the Shamsi airbase in Pakistan’s Baluchistan province.

Blackwater gained its notoriety mainly from its activities in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Iraqis have launched several cases against the company in US courts over violent attacks carried out by the company against unarmed people, including an unprovoked 2007 shooting spree in Baghdad that killed 17 civilians.
After the Baghdad incident Blackwater changed its name to Xe Services.

The company CEO Erik Prince also is facing allegations by a former US marine and a past employee that he organized the murder of witnesses that could have testified against his company during the hearings.

He has also been accused by the two witnesses, whose identities have not been disclosed by the courts for safety purposes, of having anti-Muslim sentiments, “encouraging and rewarding the destruction of Iraqi life”, and arms smuggling.

CIA confirmation of Xe involvement in Pakistan comes a day after the New York Times reported that links between Blackwater and the CIA in Iraq and Afghanistan have been closer than has yet been disclosed.
A US Congressional committee is apparently investigating links between Blackwater and American intelligence services.

The paper said that Blackwater staff had participated in clandestine CIA raids.
Blackwater is a sensitive subject in Pakistan where its name is associated with drone strikes, bombings and violent activities that have left hundreds of civilians dead.

Before the US avowal, some Pakistani TV stations had already aired images of what seemed to be “Blackwater houses” in Islamabad. Several papers had also published reports accusing certain US officials and journalists of being Xe operatives.

Pakistan’s interior minister, Rehman Malik, has even offered to resign if it is proven that Blackwater is present in Pakistan.

However, it remains to be seen whether he will keep that promise now that the CIA has confirmed that Blackwater is and was working in Pakistan.

Blackwater behind Pakistan bombings: Ex-intel chief
Sat, 12 Dec 2009 13:09:05 GMT

The former head of Pakistan’s intelligence agency, ISI, Asad Durrani said in an interview with Press TV that Blackwater, a notorious US security firm, is carrying out operations in the country.

His comments came after the US Central intelligence Agency (CIA) revealed that Blackwater, which currently works under the name Xe Services, has been involved in drone attacks in Pakistan.

The CIA said the private security company has been loading bombs on US drones that target suspected militants in Pakistan. The attacks, according to Pakistani media, kill civilians as well.

General Durrani, however, said the group may be involved in actions that destabilize the country.
“My assessment is that they [Blackwater agents] — either themselves or most probably through others, through the locals — do carry out some of the explosions,” he said.

“The idea is to carry out such actions, like carrying attacks in the civilian areas to make the others look bad in the eyes of the public.”

Pakistan, suffering from a wave of violence, has witnessed the loss of lives of more than two thousands civilians in the past two years because of bomb attacks across the country.

Americans continue mocking Pakistani law

LAHORE – Security agencies have arrested four Cobra operatives, suspected to be linked with notorious American spy agency Blackwater, while they were trying to force their entry into Lahore Cantonment on Saturday.
Well-placed sources disclosed to TheNation that the security personnel recovered lethal weapons including AK-47 rifles and spy gadgets from their possession at a checkpost near Sherpao Bridge.
The law-enforcement agencies had been put on high alert across the provincial metropolis and armed patrolling had been intensified, following the twin suicide terrorist attacks at Moon Market last week, which had killed over 50 people.
Sources claimed that the alleged arrested members of the notorious spy agency were taken to some unknown place for further interrogation after they failed to produce necessary documents and the purpose of entering into the most sensitive area in the City.
Some foreigners have taken residential apartments on rent in Cantonment area and the search operation is underway to keep a check on their activities, the sources added.
According to details, security agency personnel intercepted a suspected vehicle near Sherpao Bridge. Four persons apparently foreigners were inside the four-wheeler.
‘The suspects did not allow snap-checking as the security personnel had asked them to prove their identity and show other documents.’
The sources further revealed that the suspects started arguing with the law-enforcing agency officials as more security officials reached the spot soon after the incident.
The security officials also recovered lethal weapons including AK-47 rifles and spy devices like surveillance cameras, laptops and other equipment from their possession.
A police official, requesting his name not be mentioned, confirmed that the security officials had intercepted the suspected vehicle at Sherpao Bridge during routine checking. However, he did not mention further details regarding the recovery of lethal weapons.
Another police official said that the vehicle was released later on the intervention of federal government.

C.I.A. to Expand Use of Drones in Pakistan

C.I.A. to Expand Use of Drones in Pakistan

WASHINGTON — Two weeks ago in Pakistan, Central Intelligence Agency sharpshooters killed eight people suspected of being militants of the Taliban and Al Qaeda, and wounded two others in a compound that was said to be used for terrorist training.

'Mastermind' of Mumbai attack preaches at mosque in Lahore

Come Friday prayers in Lahore, it is not hard to find the alleged mastermind of the Mumbai attacks.

Hafiz Mohammed Saeed is neither in hiding nor in jail. The founder of Lashkar-e-Taiba is instead delivering a sermon to thousands of devoteees at the Jamia al-Qadsia mosque — one of the biggest in the city.

“God has promised to make Muslims a superpower if we follow the right path,” Mr Saeed told his followers, who listened in rapt silence.

Religion of peace ????????

Profile: Islamabad's Red Mosque
http://www.alertnet.org/thenews/newsdesk/L22430602.htm

The controversial Lal Masjid (Red Mosque) is again the focus of a bloody confrontation between Pakistani security forces and radical students in the centre of the capital, Islamabad.

In the latest violence, a bomb went off near the mosque after clashes between police and Islamist students. Officials say that at least 11 people were killed.

At the beginning of July, the mosque was the scene of a bloody siege that ended with the deaths of more than 100 people after Pakistani troops stormed the building.

Before the bloodshed, the mosque had a reputation for radicalism, mostly attracting Islamic hardline students from North West Frontier Province (NWFP) and tribal areas where support for the Taleban and al-Qaeda is strong.

'Terror links'

It was no secret that the Lal Masjid was a centre of radical Islamic learning, housing several thousand male and female students in adjacent seminaries.

Maulana Abdullah was assassinated in the mosque in the late 1990s, and after that the entire complex was run by his sons, Maulana Abdul Aziz and Abdul Rashid Ghazi.

Abdul Rashid Ghazi died in the assault earlier this month, while his brother is under police detention after trying to escape the building in disguise - wearing a burka - shortly before the security forces launched their attack.

Lol, suicide bombings my ass!

Amazing how low the US government would stoop to fuel their propaganda war.

Suicide bombers. Lol@our ignorance.

Just reading Hakimullah Mehsud's statement in my link gives you a real insight about the man, especially when he says his battle is not with the common people of Pakistan and that he cant justify blowing up innocent civilians.

AMERICAN GOVERNMENT, YOU LYING BASTARDS.

Ethics and civility go out the window when trying to justify a war based on propaganda.

Former Blackwater Officials in NY Times: We Did Offbook Jobs for CIA

HOLLAND -- Blackwater is back in the headlines after the New York Times wrote a story quoting former security operatives who say they routinely ran snatch and grab and other more deadly operations with the CIA.

Danielle Brian with the Project on Government Oversight says it was a recipe for violations of all sorts of international treaties and agreements.

Blackwater, now known as Xe, is denying they were under contract to the CIA…but Brian says that doesn’t mean they didn’t do work for them.

Holland Native and former CEO Erik Prince recently admitted in a Magazine piece that he did off the book jobs for the U.S Intelligence agency.

I carry no torch for America’s enemies (murdering thugs) but I am appalled (and embarrassed) at CIA ineptness. Initially, when first exposed to their dumbass behavior, I thought they were playing a subtle ‘intelligence’ game. However, they brought so much grief onto America’s head that what they fondly imagined was covert, couldn’t have been deliberate.

We need more blackwater ops. Strike the Jihadi terrorists right in their hearts

Demoralize the enemy from within by surprise, terror, sabotage, assassination. This is the war of the future.

Adolf Hitler

Lol, very indicative of your intellect. Bombings of the Peshawar university and a market place. 117 civilians dead. Really struck the jihadi terrorists there eh?

All that just to fuel a propaganda war.

And your reply is we need more Blackwater ops.
Nevermind the inhumane, callous, insight and ideologies running in your head, but the intellectual inability is even more glaring.

Peaceful religion ??????

We should leave them alone and they'll wipe each other out in the age old battle between the Sunni and the Shiitt sects.

LOL, when I was there it was time for the one sect of Muslims to parade the streets flagellating themselves, and they funny part was while they were doing this the other sect of Muslims sniped at them from roof tops.

Peaceful religion ??????

Yes. They made the mistake countless times telling their followers that there could be no recrimination. Their mistake.

Demoralize the enemy from within by surprise, terror, sabotage, assassination. This is the war of the future.

In the history of the human race, has it ever been different?

You need to consider that war is not only fought on the battlefield. It hurts sometimes. For some it hurts forever.

I laugh at anti 'terrorists' who advocate and endorse the murder of innocent civilians, bwahahahaha

An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth...plus a head...Works wonders.

Deuteronomy 19:19-21

19 then do to him as he intended to do to his brother. You must purge the evil from among you. 20 The rest of the people will hear of this and be afraid, and never again will such an evil thing be done among you. 21 Show no pity: life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot.

Exodus 21:23-25

23 But if there is serious injury, you are to take life for life, 24 eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, 25 burn for burn, wound for wound, bruise for bruise.

Leviticus 24:17-22

17 " 'If anyone takes the life of a human being, he must be put to death. 18 Anyone who takes the life of someone's animal must make restitution—life for life. 19 If anyone injures his neighbor, whatever he has done must be done to him: 20 fracture for fracture, eye for eye, tooth for tooth. As he has injured the other, so he is to be injured. 21 Whoever kills an animal must make restitution, but whoever kills a man must be put to death. 22 You are to have the same law for the alien and the native-born. I am the LORD your God.' "

So you don't consider them terrorists?

One mans terrorist is another mans freedom fighter. If they can stoop as low as blowing up a market place to just blame militants. Speaks volumes. Trust me mate, there are no ethics in the United states government. Let me tell you right now, nearly every single war has a monetary, financial agenda. The US government have mastered the art of deception. When the Russians invaded Afghanistan and US goverment was supplying the Taliban with weapons, then what? Bin laden wasnt a terrorist back then? When Saddam was fighting the Iranians and the Americans were supplying him chemical weapons. Then Saddam wasnt a threat to national security? We know the Americans all side with whomever will comply with their agendas. You think Hamid Karzai was instated in free and fair elections? lol no he was instated because he was willing to give the states their side of the deal.
