Hi All

Could anyone from the Richwood area, please give an idea of the ADSL quality in Richwood.
I checked the net and apparently they are connected all the way to the Bothasig exchange?

And/Or if you could post your SNR Margin and Line Attenuation as well.

Thanks.

I live in the bothasig area and one thing i have to say is that the exchange around here is pretty useless! I've been struggling with Telkom these last few months to come and have a look at our exchange or maybe move my line to a different rack but it's all been for nothing. They seem to fix the congestion for a week of so then its just back to what it was before.

I would sometimes get a glimmer of hope when i have a less than 100ms ping to a local website / domain but it sure doesn't last very long as it soon shoots up to over 300ms; somethings even hitting 800 - 900ms. I've pretty much given up and iv'e been looking around for another solution but so far its been a difficult task.

By all means i can't tell you what the quality is like in Richwood but if its anything like what i've been experiencing your better off going without it. Stress free and you'll most likely live longer.

i also live in bothasig area. But my experiences are different. I've had nothing but good service. im about 1.5km from exchange and snr margin is 19db which is expected and up is 12db. Line Attenuation is about 29db. ill post router results later here.all in all im happy with 4mbps line. runs good all day.

@cronus sure you've asked to change port? also to come check your telephone box inside your house? (that was my issue once). what ISp you with? MWEB is having some big issues lately and i get also over 100ms pings but on telkom and openweb im at 23ms again. also check your SNR margin etc because if thats high stop complaining and thats your problem.

PS. dont call telkom, log a complaint online or sms the fault. twice they've come out within 2days to help me. and all other friends with internet is same story in Bothasig and Edgemead.

as for the exchange i saw article showing it is being upgraded. i would say go online and check if can get adsl first. think it telkom.co.za/checkadsl/ or something like that. and then call for line if you want it

I have a Telkom account with a few backup accounts at other ISPs (MWEB / Openweb) as well and they all read the same (300+ to any local ping).

Connection 10012 kbps
Noise 11.9db (upstream)
Attenuation 33.8db (upstream)

The fact that you've been able to have Telkom come out and help you when you had an issue just means i have to worst luck ever.

I've tried to get them to send a technician to come have look but they tend to either keep postponing or when they do arrive at my house it's when my internet works perfectly and the tech can't find any issue. The issue mainly starts at around 7PM and would continue way after 12PM.

ok that all seems correct. so walti agrees network has been ungraded.

i would say as soon see drops then try other acc and see what happens. since when has this problem came about?
could be that your being shaped to hell... i do about 200Gb on openweb and all is well never shaped so far. telkom has softcap remember that as well. try the openweb acc for a day then next day try telkom and next mweb and see what goes for what.

can you run a tracert www.mybroadband.co.za? then ill also do that and can compare.

try get telkom out again and ask him to check the first box that comes into your home/ do it over. then check. then replace filters and remove telephones. sometimes telephones cause noise. see what happens.

what i normally do is: remove everything from network except my pc. then remove all telephones. then i check if works if not change router, if not change filters if not then i would only get telkom in... your network starts from router so rest is up to telkom to sort out.

Cool, thanks for the reply. I'll have a look tonight when i get home. And then start running some tests starting around 7-ish and post my findings.

So everything was going fine earlier.. My ping was fantastic on all accounts and i was all smiles :D
Until around 21:45 when things started to go a bit south. So i quickly did a ping test or two as well as a trace to mybroadband and below are my results:

Ok, so i left the testing yesterday as my ping and download speeds where perfect. However tonight it started up again with high ping and slow downloads - this started around 9-ish again.

Below is a trace to mybroadband and its a lot higher than my previous attempts earlier this week.

This weekend i'm going to try and start swapping out a few things. I'll remove the phone and check the filters and re-test but i just have this feeling that it might be for nothing. i've by sunday i have not yet seen any improvement i'll contact telkom and hopefully they'll send someone out to come have a look.

@HApyM3al - Do you happen to know if technicians would come out during the hours of 8PM -10PM? I'm taking a stab in the dark but i'm guessing not.. I would be great if they could so that then they can see for themselves that this issue only starts happening during these "peak times".

damm that tracert is horrible :/ sorry for delay was busy weekend on Hulu so far lol... i cant say they will come out but you do get the odd tech that would come out between those times.

You cant really say 8-10pm is "peak times" as if look at Mwebs network status they show every hour what adsl status is and normally it is 7-10 during the day and at evenings it is about 4. I wouldnt say during peak times. maybe the ISP busy or exchange is getting busy. But try first remove everything off network and see if improves.

Ive had a telephone that didnt ring on and that caused my line to drop and be very bad... so telephones and anything funny remove it. even try without filters. i ran 2 months without filter before and it is fine.

i would say dont test during day rather test at night time when your problem is normally happening. :)

goodluck
