Hi, for the last month or so almost every night at around this time my ping are ridiculously high. It happens on afrihost, telkom and cybersmart so it can't be an isp problem. Any idea what it could be? During the day its fine but at night it goes haywire for a few hours. When it started i just thought it might be telkom upgrades but it hasn't stopped :(

Pinging mybroadband.co.za [41.203.21.137] with 32 bytes of data:

Please post a traceroute instead!

By the sound of things your Telkom exchange is congested.

Yea not sure why i never added it, but everything is fine again now :(

Also i am on the Durban North exchange which is supposedly getting or got MSANS, surely wouldn't be congestion then? Not sure if all Durban north exchanges get MSANs or only a select few.

Hmm, i guess ill just wait till they've completed the upgrades and see if its improves, if not i'll phone telkom and see what they say.

I had exactly the same issue in CT. Turned out to be a huge exchange f'up because they had incorrectly routed all our traffic.

The way I got a quick fix was I got hold of one of the techies at the exchange, don't use telkom helpdesk if your line still works, they have no idea when it comes to quality of service, you have to speak to a tech, they'll usually have some way of sorting it out by switching you to another circuit or turning you back if you've been recently upgraded

It's doing it again.

I was having the exact same issue for about 2 months, but they must have done some work on the mini-exchange and now I no longer have any issues at night.

It was doing this for about 2 weeks a while ago then came right for about a week and now it's doing it again. Even when my ping is under 100 there is a spike every 5secs of about 200 - 300ms without fail. Makes gaming pretty damn frustrating.

having exact same issue for long time. phone them even talk to one of techie but they also could not fix the issue. i know its a congested at the exchange. just forget it exchange congestion not a small problem for them...........

Yea , i shudder to think what it's gonna be like when they have completed the upgrades if it's this bad now. This only seemed to start since they announced the upgrades.

Upgrades will relieve congestion in the long run as people won't be running their lines at full capacity 100% of the time.
