RIM executives explain BlackBerry downtime

Honestly, who cares about BB? It's on its way out already. Get yourself a decent phone then this cr@p won't happen 2 you.

Bad day in the office or are you childish by nature? Nothing wrong with blackberries, network issues happen.

Why can't children understand that it's none of their business what phones other people have? Feel the need to justify your own decisions? I have a bb and iphone and both are great, my bb just suits my needs better, and millions of others.

kthanksbye

I also don't get all the hate?
I have a BB and an Android device, both have their advantages.
It's all about what suits your needs.
I've recently heard someone putting down android devices because he has an iphone, just because I happened to mention I bought an Android phone. I just nodded.
I think its a childish debate.

Funny you should say that, because BB is actually popular among broke-ass kids :p

Security through Obscurity

Does anyone see the irony of RIM using Google (youtube) to communicate with their users?

A lack of feedback

One of the biggest criticisms from BlackBerry users about the problems was the lack of information from RIM regarding the downtime.
FYI: They've not really explained what went wrong, or how they intend to stop it happening again.
Only some vague reference to a switch.

RIM's corporate culture of Security through Obscurity is to not provide information - hence this fiasco.

Updates to BB-OS always lack change/fix logs.
You have to dig around in forums on crackberry to get details.

They expose their users to risks by relying on BB-OS leaks to test new versions.

People are not fed up with BB, they are fed up with RIM's corporate culture and image.
Even RIM staff are fed up with RIM's corporate culture - see the "Open Letter"
http://www.bgr.com/2011/06/30/open-...xec-tells-all-as-company-crumbles-around-him/

Too Little Too Late.
It's not so much the severity of the crisis that people remember, it's how you handled the crisis.
And RIM basically did sweet blow all.
Time for folks to move to a grown up provider.

What i cant understand is a company as big as RIM has their whole network passing through a single switch??? Im pretty sure this isnt true as generally you have several switches to split the data and create redundancy. Mayb its just me but i fell that RIM is covering up for something else (ie they were hacked etc.)
I dont know how they structure their network but im sure they will have local servers thats dont require a connection to the main switch

Also never got the massive hatred towards BB :/

To certain people if a brand, device, feature, product etc is a ball hair behind another, it's the WORST product on the market and NO ONE can even LOOK at the product - let alone actually USE it!

I've loved my smartphones and constantly upgraded to the latest, newest, better version - but I'm actually satisfied with a BB. I may not have helicopter anti scratch glass, 1080p video recording or a 10MP camera with LED flash - but wtf cares ... ?

Anyway - that said, I'll probably ditch my BB and go for another phone at my next upgrade - due mainly to the dismal service and speeds. I'm not sure if it's BB or Vodacom - but it seems the option is slow/free or fast/paid and I'm going the 2nd route

I've been a BB fan for quite a while now, having multiple BB handsets in the last few years and recently changing to Android. All the platforms/phones have their pros and cons and agree that you can't really say one is better than the other (i.e. BB vs Android vs iPhone, etc). HOWEVER, one of BB's strong points was always is reliable, efficient message delivery and I'm sure this event has tarnished their image quite seriously.

Would you like some cheese with that whine?

I think it was bgc or some website like that where I saw that they said Blackberry got threats of begin hacked by the hacktivists or someone asking them to shut down bbm in order to stop the riots in europe or where ever and then they got another threat saying this group will hack blackberry if they shut down bbm.

RIM Service updates and teleconference

Check service updates at http://www.rim.com/newsroom/service-update.shtml
You can also listen to the teleconference (after registering)

Basically lots of waffling by RIM execs, avoiding many questions .... but at least they have finally woken up and started interacting with the media. Probably too little too late, and I am glad I use a Nokia

All I got to say is.... "you get what you pay for"

You buy cheap product, you get cheap service!

Gary how long did you have a BB for?

This episode brings into question the disaster recovery procedures in place at RIM. If a single switch is a point of failure for the entire network, were I to be a RIM shareholder I would be seriously questioning the level of Governance being implemented.

When was a full DR exercise last taken? What kind of hot standby systems are in place?

Cloud solutions need far more robust DR protection than those on a campus and this applies to all Cloud solutions, not only RIM. There needs to be 4 or 5 levels of protection with protection between the each to guard against a domino effect. And the DR process needs to be able to be fully tested.

What's pretty amusing is that across most of the social media I see, the most extreme vitriol is coming from people who own iPhones and Android devices. 70% of all posts seem to be from people who don't have a BB!

In general, the BB users I have spoken to, and this goes for me too, all say that they were hell of a frustrated and are now very stoked to have everything back up and working as per normal.

While it was a very irritating couple of days, with perspective all the BB users downgraded from a smart phone for those days to a normal cell phone, and are now back on a smart phone. No doubt a system and redundancy failure at RIM, and no doubt they will make sure it won't happen again, but really not the end of the world.

BB's downtime didn't really bother me, but I know it bothered the rest of the world! hahahaha. :)

People get so dependant on a BB it's a joke!

Killa, I've never had one. I only ever had to buy one for my Mom and set it up for her... and I didn't really like what I saw. The Boring interface was tiny and blocky and counter-intuitive. It was a real schlepp to get everything set up. But she did like the instant delivery once it was all set up. All the stupid pointless facebook game requests really irritated her though. I had to go onto her FB profile and block all of the games. And it was NOT cheap. Her entire cellphone bill doubled. And my Dad also got some stupid BES charge added to his bill as well, even though we didn't ask for and have never used the Exchange feature.
