Dame Vera Lynn, the British singer whose songs were hugely popular during World War Two, has died aged 103.
 
Dame Vera Lynn, the Forces' Sweetheart whose songs helped raise morale in World War Two, has died aged 103.

The singer's family confirmed she died on Thursday morning surrounded by her close relatives.

"The family are deeply saddened to announce the passing of one of Britain's best-loved entertainers at the age of 103," a statement said.

Dame Vera was best known for performing for the troops during World War Two in countries including India and Burma.
 
She sure had a good innings.... for a pinup.

If anyone wants an explanation: Vera Lynn sang a song about British Troops coming home from WW2; Pink's (the main character of The Wall) dad died in the war before Pink was old enough to really remember him. This song is Pink lamenting that his father never came home and how that was "the first brick in the Wall," as it were. His dad never came back like Vera "promised." It's commonly regarded as a turning point in the album's storyline.
