RIP Saab (A Thread for Saab Lovers)

Chinese property developer buys 51% of reborn Saab maker

Evergrande Group, major stakeholders in Faraday Future, pays $930 million for controlling share of National Electric Vehicle Sweden

China’s third-largest property developer, Evergrande Group, has paid $930 million to become a controlling shareholder of EV maker National Electric Vehicle Sweden (NEVS).

The move comes as part of Evergrande founder Hui Ka-yan’s ambitions to diversify the company’s business portfolio and tap into a burgeoning electric vehicle market.

NEVS acquired the main assets of Swedish manufacturer Saab when the company closed its doors in 2012. This included the firm’s Trollhättan factory where NEVS now produces electric vehicles based on the final generation of Saab’s 9-3 saloon. A 2012 attempt to obtain the rights to Saab’s branding and logo on its vehicles was unsuccessful.

The company is part-owned by the municipal government of Tianjin in north-eastern China, where a second facility with a capacity of 50,000 units per year began producing 9-3-based EV models for the Chinese market in 2017.

The deal between NEVS and Evergrande will aid development of a planned electric crossover, the 9-3X EV, which will initially be produced for China but could make a European debut as part of the company’s aims to become one of the industry’s biggest producers of EVs.

A similar deal, worth $2 billion, between Evergrande and American EV start-up Faraday Future was threatened last year by a dispute over claims of withheld funding and attempted control seizure on the part of the investor.

A new contract drawn up by the two companies at the end of 2018 is anticipated to bring an end to a period of uncertainty for the Los Angeles-based manufacturer.

An Evergrande spokesperson, quoted in the South China Morning Post, said: “Through acquiring corporations possessing leading new energy automotive technology and production capacity, the board believes that the group’s growth capabilities can be strengthened, and a strong competitiveness in the fast-growing new energy automotive industry can be obtained”.

Zombie Saab Finds New Electric Car Partner: Koenigsegg

In 2009—which was a decade ago, FYI—Koenigsegg’s purchase of the beloved and mostly deceased Swedish automaker Saab was all but complete before it fell through at the last minute and Saab later went bankrupt.

But now, 10 years later, Koenigsegg and zombie Saab are together once more, expanding a partnership to “develop a product for new and untapped segments” and talking about electrification.

Will Saab never die? Will Saab never be allowed to die? It’s hard to say.

mwgusfwrkdy1hyic5rzo.jpg

Koenigsegg announced the partnership on Tuesday, adding to its involvement with the confusingly named Chinese company National Electric Vehicle Sweden, or NEVS, which plucked Saab from bankruptcy in 2012.

NEVS debuted an electric “NEVS 9-3” model based on the Saab 9-3 in 2017, having lost rights to the Saab name when, two years after it acquired Saab, it also had a bankruptcy scare.

Anyway, Koenigsegg said it and NEVS will team up to develop “parallel vehicle models in slightly higher volumes” with emphasis on electrification—basically, sharing resources to make more cars that would either be hybrids, EVs or something else that falls under the vague banner of “electrification.”

It also said the partnership would help “growth opportunities” in the hypercar segment, but didn’t say exactly how.

Technically, your multi-million-dollar Koenigsegg supercar can’t exactly be a Saab, but maybe you can wish it into existence if you stretch your imagination and buy some badges off eBay.

Koenigsegg’s announcement points out that it and NEVS have already been working together, but didn’t give much detail about it or what this expansion of the partnership will entail.

It does, however, include an investment of about $170 million from NEVS at current exchange rates.

That investment will get NEVS a 20-percent minority stake in Koenigsegg’s parent company, and more money will go into a joint venture between the two.

From the announcement, uploaded as a .pdf here:

Additionally, the parties are forming a joint venture to expand into new market segments where NEVS AB is contributing USD 150 million in starting capital for a 65 percent stake and Koenigsegg obtains 35 percent by contributing primarily with intellectual property, technology licenses, and product design.

Koenigsegg already has a distinguished unique market position for hyper cars, and through the additional joint venture NEVS and Koenigsegg are partnering up to develop a product for new and untapped segments, leveraging both of the companies’ strengths.

Koenigsegg also said it’ll get to use NEVS production plants in the Swedish city of Trollhättan, and mentioned distribution channels in China thanks to NEVS’ new majority owner, Chinese company Evergrande, which went to zombie Saab after backing out of its investments into Faraday Future. It’s a weird deal.

Sure, a further EV-technology partnership with a supercar maker probably isn’t the Great Saab Revival we’ve all been illogically praying for, because that never seems to happen.

But it is an excuse to check in on Saab more frequently, which we’ve now done twice this month. And that, friends, is a welcome excuse.

Final Saab 9-3 to leave NEVS factory in Sweden

An unused crash test model from 2013 is set to go up for auction later this year

The last new Saab 9-3 ever to be made will be auctioned in Sweden this year.

The almost unused saloon was built in 2013. It will now be sold by National Electric Vehicle Sweden (NEVS), the EV manufacturer that acquired Saab’s assets upon the latter’s collapse in 2012.

The model up for auction is a 217bhp 2.0-litre petrol-powered Aero Turbo saloon in silver, which, according to the company, was intended for crash test purposes and set aside from customer models.

The car has been parked ever since, with just 3.1 recorded miles on the clock, making it the last new 9-3 to leave the factory.

NEVS will display the 9-3 in Trollhattän this weekend during the town’s annual Saab Car Museum Festival celebrations, with the auction set to take place later this year.

The Last New Saab With Just Three Miles on the Clock Is Going Up for Auction

Saab, as most of us know, is quite the busy zombie. It died, was retrieved from the great beyond by the confusingly named Chinese company National Electric Vehicle Sweden, and later formed loose ties to supercar maker Koenigsegg. Now, the last new Saab, which is technically five years old, is for sale.

NEVS announced on Friday that the last new Saab, a 2014 Saab 9-3 Aero sedan with a turbocharged, 220-horsepower engine, automatic transmission and silver paint job, will go to auction this year. The car is from the 2014 model year but only has three miles on the odometer, the announcement said, which should lead everyone to wonder why exactly this was the case.

Did NEVS keep it around, not driving it, on purpose? Unlikely. Did the company forget it was there until someone stumbled upon it, coated in a blanket of dust in a mop closet? More likely. It’s a perfect Saab story for Saab, after all.

CLASSIC BUY: Saab 9-3 (1998-2009)

History

Saab stood for “Svenska Aeroplan Aktiebolaget”, which means Swedish Aircraft Corporation Limited in the Scandinavian language. Founded in 1937, its parent company specialised in aerospace and defence hardware. Saab joined Scania Trucks in 1968 and went through many difficulties under GM ownership in the early 1990s. The company eventually filed for bankruptcy in 2011 (in South Africa, Scania is still active with a wide range of commercial vehicles).

With homework, you shouldn’t be too worried about parts availability on this 9-3, and used prices are low, making it a calculated risk.

Swedish EV firm NEVS to sell final new Saab 9-3 this month

An unused crash test model from 2013 will be auctioned to raise funds for sustainable mobility research

The last new Saab 9-3 ever to be made will be auctioned off later this month to raise funds for research into zero-emissions travel.

The almost-unused saloon was built in 2013. It will now be sold by National Electric Vehicle Sweden (NEVS), the EV manufacturer that acquired Saab’s assets upon the firm's collapse in 2012. Proceeds will be donated to NEVS' Sustainable Mobility Scholarship at Sweden's University West.

NEVS said: "The fund will be awarded to individuals making significant efforts to pave the way for future mobility solutions, ranging from electric car technologies and sharing economies to initiatives for self-driving cars."

The model up for auction is a 217bhp 2.0-litre petrol Aero Turbo saloon in silver, which, according to the company, was intended for crash test purposes and set aside from customer models.

The car has been parked ever since, with around 40 recorded miles on the clock, making it the final new 9-3 to leave the Tröllhattan factory.

The last Saab with 66km 'on the clock' to go under the hammer

Earlier in June this year, initial news of an auction was released at the Saab Car Museum Festival in Trollhättan, Sweden, which created a major buzz among Saab fans worldwide.

Now it has been announced that the last Saab will be auctioned via Bilweb Auctions in October.

Online auction

In addition to getting ownership of the coveted last 'new' Saab, the buyer will be invited to an exclusive visit to the Nevs factory, including development labs and technical departments.

The day ends with a full tour of the very rare collection of cars in the Saab Museum. Hotel and lunch are included in the experience. The proceeds of the auction will be donated to The NEVS Sustainable Mobility Scholarship.

A fund has also been set up by the company to promote research within the sharing economy and smart mobility acceptance at University West in Sweden.

The story behind the last new Saab

Initially, the production of Saab was halted in 2011.

However, between 2013 and 2014 electric car company Nevs – the buyer of the bankrupt Swedish automaker – relaunched production in the original Saab factory. The last batch of cars comprised of 420 Saab 9-3Aeros.

The car now being auctioned out is a Saab 9-3 MY14 Silver 2.0T Automatic with only approximately 66km on the odometer. It was set aside from the production line to undergo a development test that was never carried out. Subsequently, it was used as a reference vehicle during the limited production run.

When production stopped in May 2014 the car was parked in the Nevs factory in the event petrol car production might resume. So, while all other Saab 9-3 were sold to customers in different installments, this reference car remained untouched for almost five years.
