Hi Guys,

noticed something quite interesting yesterday,

brought original kia parts(plugs and filter) from kia edenvale,
but I already had at home plugs NGK ones from midas,( quarter of the price)

opened the boxes, checked the serial numbers, they match, checked the brand they match,

maybe Im imagining things, but is buying original parts from the dealer the biggest ripoff imaginable?

so let me understand this, you pay for a VERY expensive box?

Yup pretty much.
They arent called stealerships for nothing.
Some parts are definitely worth getting original and others are not.

Swings and roundabouts :)

There was a time when original BMW shocks & exhausts were cheaper from the dealer than the after-market fitment centres.

Big time, especially with service parts - the car manufacturer doesn't make plugs, filters, belts etc. but they do put a standard (huge) markup on everything. Often they will sell pirate parts (because of lack of availability of originals) at the same price of their own parts. I've bought parts from third party parts dealers at 15 or 20 percent of dealer prices - ignition switch for around R120 - dealer price: R800 odd. Generally you can expect to pay 30% to 50% less if you shop around.

Who buys S/Plugs and a filter at the dealer?

had to return the snapped clutch cable and the guy there said I can pick parts for the same amount of value.

whats interesting to note is you pay for the ULTRA expensive box, so that's why service costs so much, its all margin then.

so in that case how can they offer you a service plan and still make money?

There is a place near that edenvale Kia called Eden Clutch and brake, they stock OEM Parts for Kia/Hyundai at a fraction of the price.

Years ago I read a story of a vw golf petrol filter being the same as in a Porsche.. huge difference in price though.

Im learning a lot here, so a part like a cabin filter?

is that worth going to kia for?

Try places like Midas etc first..

Never assume you can't get the part before trying elsewhere...

A large portion of parts in a car are manufactured by 3rd party companies, and they'll use the same part across multiple manufacturers and models.

problem is I lost mine a while back, dont even got a sample to go with,
not sure what else do do except go to the criminals to let me know what part I need to buy.

Year and model of the vehicle..

They have books with all the parts in it, they don't need a sample.

Also, if you lost it a while back and the car is still working fine, why replace it?

I do. The plugs and filter are cheaper at Ford than at Midas/Autozone. My car uses NGK Irridium plugs, they are about R95 - R105 each at Midas, and R75 at the dealers. Only difference the dealership plugs have Motorcraft stampped om one side, and NGK Irriudium on the other.

working perfectly, kia picanto 2010,

do you actually need a cabin filter anyway? is it necessary?
