Ripple control seems to be functional again today. But they did so much switching this morning :eek: loadshedding seems imminent...:eek:

@Moederloos: my geyser was turned off by 7AM this morning already. Do you concur with yours?

For those of you that have interest in DSM/ripple control, if you have a ripple receiver in your home and can see the unit and it's state, if you can, please contribute to this study by posting here about how often or not they cut your geyser off.
 
How does it actully switch on and off, is it connected to a phone line? some special circuit? radio???

It works on the principle of an audio tone that is modulated on the mains. The audio tone, ranging from 175Hz to over 1kHz is turned on and off in a way that it represents a bit stream. This is not new technology, the idea comes from around 1945.

The unit then receives this bitstream and if a match occurs with the code it received, then it will either switch off or switch on the load.

Some systems use radio but the radio systems to date have been a failure.
 
I have just discovered that I also have a ripple device controlling my electrical geyser

I presume it is possible to disconnet the ripple device.

The reason I ask is because I have ordered a Solar Geyser that has a backup electrical element in it. In cases of extended cold cloaded days, the idea is that a thermastat in the Solar Geyser will switch in the eletrical element.

Is there any legal implications.

Well with a solar geyser you will probably qualify for them to remove the ripple receiver. I am not sure about this but it would be an interesting test case.

The best would be to ask City Power about this.
 
Are these devices supposed to be mounted near the geyser because mine is mounted on the outside isolation switch on the side of the house (not in the meter box)

No, they can be mounted anywhere on the dwelling, even in a box outside, which is the usual scenario
 
okay so this ripple device is installed before the distribution board, and it is activated , will it stop a kettle from boiling ? :confused: Just a thought :)
 
Not exactly no. What they often do when they build the house is install a box outside. They then route the geyser wires to that box, from the tripswitch on the DB (just live and neutral, earth is not needed for the ripple receiver) and then to the geyser itself, from that box. This somewhat prevents the homeowner from easily bypassing the ripple relay.

Yes, if you can get the municipality to assign you a channel and they can give you a means to issue commands, then yes you can stop a kettle from boiling. The technology allows for a single switch to be controlled in the grid. Good luck with that because right now they're really not even interested in upgrading their 30+ year old antique system to a more modern electronic one.

How do you know when it goes off? :confused:
