Risk in in using Free Wi-FI

I am new in wi-fi usage and very weary of threats involved, can someone enlighten me of those risks and how can they be prevented? Cape Town and most of the restuarants are fastly offering this service of which is highly appreciated.

Use a VPN service, open access wifi is super easy to sniff, google firesheep for an example of how easy this is.

Hi There,
Simple rule. If you do not control the WiFi don't trust it. So for those great places and I use them a lot I will never do Banking on them nor will I access any site with confidential information on them.

The analogy to remember is that using WiFi in restaurants is like having multiple partners. You need to know that you are secure.
