RJ-11 / RJ-45

Hi there.

I'm leaving for Dabai this evening. The Hotel offers high speed internet and have RJ-11 and RJ-45 outlets. I have a "normal" (I know there's not such thing) cable between my Laptop and Router. Is one of these RJ's OK?

The standard network cable connections are RJ-45. (The one you use)
RJ-11 is the standard telephone cable connector

The RJ-11 is what is also used with old modem dial-up connections. 56kb (dial-up) vs 384kb< (broadband) speeds. Narrowband if you will.

RJ-45 jacks are used, but the configuration of the cable might make a difference; straight-through vs crossover. The proper way to connect a pc to a router for network access (as opposed to configuration) would be with a crossover cable. However if you mean a switch, you probably mean a straight through cable.

Luckily, though, most devices these days are able to use both.

I think its somewhere near where I am in Richards Bay....often referred to as "THE BAY" or "Die Baai"......or perhaps "Dabai" for short?!

Most Hotels in Dubai give you 100Mb/s Ethernet at your desk in the room. 3G is useless depending how high you are ( i got zero signal ont he 30th floor )

RJ45 straight or crossed will do just fine.
